Jack Snook Obituary

Jack Snook was born on January 29, 1929 in Fruita, Colorado and died on February 15, 2018 in Boulder, Colorado. The cause of death was cancer. As a boy Jack lived on his parent's fruit farm. "Sometimes we kids would just rustle a watermelon and hollow it out." His excellent Spanish he learned from Mexican field hands. "Snookie" attended school in Fruita where he played sports and the school yearbook reported his favorites as "ice cream and women." After graduation in 1947 Jack served three years in the Navy, mostly in Cuba. In New Orleans he married briefly-"Didn't like it much"- and ever after remained a confirmed bachelor. Jack was an expert hairdresser and barber. Back in Colorado, during Boulder's hippie heydays he owned the Crazy Horse Salon until he sold out and founded a barbershop, Jack's Place on the Hill. In retirement he worked part time as a legal courier-"It gets me out of the house"-until the digital age made him redundant. Besides his many friends Jack's survived by his sister, Jayne Snook Weldon, his nephew, Bart Weldon, and his brother, Jim Snook. There will be a memorial service at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, February 28th at the Presbyterian Manor, 1050 Arapahoe, Boulder.

I didn´t know that Jack had passed away. We had great times in the 50´s and 60´s. He was my hairdresser for quite some time.
I lost track of him over the years but I never forgot him and the times we had.

I knew Jack from the Presbyterian Manor, because my Mom, Ruth Jones, lived there for 7 years. My heart was always warmed by Jack's gentle nature and friendliness. Even though I didn't know the details of his life well, he touched my heart. I will miss him.

I met Jack when he started retirement living across the street from my office on the corner of 8th and Walnut. I remember the moment well; I was watering the grass early in the morning and Jack struck up a conversation with me. Thereafter, he became my closest friend. We both shared a love for Latin America, and in fact, I took him on a trip with me to Guadalajara when I heard that Frontier had started up direct flights to that city. The moment we were on the plane at DIA he was making friends with Mexicans left and right. Once there, we stayed in a hotel near El Catedral (a humongous church that the conquistadores started to build in 1525 (just 35 yrs after Columbus landed in Cuba) The hotel we stayed in was built in 1610 and had been operating as a hotel ever since. We took a bus to Ajijic, a small tourist town near Lake Chalapa and I remember Jack making friends with all the Mexican families on the bus on the way there. He loved to stop locals on the street and ask them for directions or other information. Jack was in his element down there. He loved the Mexican people.

I'll always remember Jack. He was a good person.

Jack and I became neighbors in 1994 when I moved into Cascade Condos at 6th and Cascade. It turned out that he had been cutting my boys hair at Jack's On the Hill for years. He helped me in my garden, laid a flagstone path to street, chose plants, showed me how to trim my plants and trees, and brought over home-cooked specialties. He continued to cut my hair after he moved to his Canyon condo. I visited him at his Presbyterian Manor condo where he showed me around. I always saw him at grocery stores, in/out of the Justice Center, so young spry and cheerful. He had a special selfless kindness. I will miss seeing him. RIP, dear friend.

Jack was a good friend who also did some legal courier work for me. I met him when he lived on Walnut Street and I worked across the street. He was a good soul and I will miss his companionship.
