John Goodman Obituary

John Paul Goodman, 74, of Boulder passed away May 7, 2018 at Boulder Community Health. He was born December 10, 1943 in Cañon City, Colorado to John D. and Ruth (Hardy) Goodman. John was raised and attended High School in Cañon City. He moved to Boulder to attend the University of Colorado and was a Buffs fan until the end. He received both his Bachelor of Arts and Master's degree in Music Education from CU. John married his soulmate and best friend, Cathy Sickert on August 1, 1970 in Klamath Falls, Oregon. John was an educator for forty one years in Boulder at Burbank Junior High, Fairview High, Casey Middle and Douglas Elementary schools, as well as Manhattan School of the Arts. After his retirement he continued to volunteer at public schools in both Boulder and Longmont. He was a huge proponent of keeping the arts in school. He also taught Spanish with most of his volunteer teaching focused on ESL students. Teaching was one of his greatest passions and he influenced hundreds of student's lives with his love for them. A great humanitarian in word and deed, he helped start the Nicaragua Project in 2000, which built a community center in Somoto, Nicaragua that serves as a school today and that they named after him. Overcoming great obstacles after being diagnosed with Polio as a child, John lettered in tennis in high school. John is survived by his wife Cathy, four daughters; Kimberly Goodman, Bobbie Goodman, Racheal Goodman and Mendy Hernandez and a grandson Nathan Hernandez. He was preceded in death by his parents, survived by father-in-law, Keith Sickert. As close to an angel on earth as ever there was, a source of inspiration who was loved by so many, he leaves a legacy of goodness. The Memorial Service will be held 10:30 AM Saturday May 12, 2018 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Inurnment to follow in the Bethlehem Columbarium. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the John Goodman Memorial Fund. Donations will go towards enhancing the lives of children, locally and globally. When I was in 9th grade I auditioned for the show choir at Burbank Jr. High. I was NOT gifted with a voice for singing. As Mr. Goodman informed me I had not made the choir, tears welled up in my eyes. He was perplexed at why someone not passionate about singing would be upset about not making the cut. "Mr. Goodman, all my friends are in choir. I'm just trying to be with them." Mr. Goodman's generous heart and creative mind sprung in to action. He quickly had a proposal for me. If I promised not to sing and only mouth the words I could join my friends in show choir. Deal! I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. That day Mr. Goodman taught me about generosity, adaptability, and problem solving. Mr. Goodman's joy filled influence on the lives of kids in Boulder Valley will be felt for generations.

Teachers are a gift; they just know how to touch our hearts. Mr. Goodman leaves a gift of many fond remembrances that will be spoken of often. As you warmly reflect on the experiences and lifelong joys you shared with him, trust that "they who mourn, shall be comforted". ~Matt. 5:4

One of the things that I still think about to this day is how Mr. Goodman taught us about the Beatles' "Revolution 9" and how when it played backwards it revealed what some people thought was a secret message. I was a student of his back at Burbank Junior High in 1991, and the thing that stuck with me most was what a loving, sweet teacher he was. He was one of the bright spots during those difficult years, and I just loved him. He exuded good through and through and his passion for teaching just made school that much better -- one of the classes I looked forward to most.

John was one of the most inspirational people I ever knew. He brought the best out of every one of his students (including in church choir!) and never wavered in his faith, his passion for life, or his desire to change the world. Mission accomplished!

I had the great pleasure to have known John, first, through his sweet daughters Rachael and Mendy as elementary students, and later when he volunteered at elementary schools where I taught in Longmont. His contributions to the support and education of students were countless. I will miss his friendly greetings, and his genuinely sincere desire to do good for others. He was a blessing and a wonderful man who will be missed by many.

The words in this obituary could not possibly paint a more perfect, accurate picture of Mr Goodman. He was genuine inside and out and blessed the lives of so many. I can still see that wonderful, ever present smile. Rest easy friend. God bless.
