Stephen Walker Obituary

Stephen Elliott Walker, beloved husband, father, brother, friend and mentor to so many, passed away on December 21, 2021. He fought against a disease that has struck down many, cancer, more specifically melanoma. He was 72 years old. Stephen was born in Denver to Roscoe Walker, Jr. and Ann (Tink) Dezer. The second of 4 children. He graduated from Cherry Creek High School and went on to attend the University of Oklahoma in Norman for his undergraduate and Masters, He finished his PHD at CU in Boulder and lived in Boulder the rest of his life. Steve was a clinical therapist for many years but pivoted to sports psychology in the last couple of decades. He worked with Olympians, World Champions, State Champions and the athlete or performing artist that wanted to bring their best when it mattered most. He was well respected and appreciated by so many athletes and their families. His coaching and teachings went far beyond the ball field or concert stage. It flowed into school performance and better life choices in general. He married Donna Anglesano in August 1987 and they welcomed sons, Maxwell Dean Walker and Dominik Delos Walker in the early nineties. Both Donna and the boys are devastated to face life without him. Steve had a high sense of morals and did most things because they were the right thing to do. He was always there for his family and friends and especially his clients. His circle of close friends braced themselves for this loss, and one of his best friends wrote: Waking up to a world in which, Steve, one of the most cherished individuals (who welcomed my calls every day for 42 years) is no longer amongst us. We grieve, we miss him, we are so sad at his death and departure. Yet we also know of his struggles these past years with cancer and the devastating effects of the treatments, the constant doctor appointments, the numerous Scans, immunotherapies, hospital stays. Steve perservered on, with all our help and love, to overcome the inevitable. But it was not to be and we will be forever grateful that we were close to him for so long. When people say, "he will be missed". Missed doesn't even come close to the hole in everyone's heart that will take forever to be filled, if at all. Steve was one of those really special people who put others before himself, a rarity in this world today. A memorial will be announced at a future date. Steve leaves behind his wife of 35 years, Donna, his two sons, Max and Dominik, his daughter, Alisa Raines (Steve), his grandchildren, Aaron Raines(Jen) and BriAnn Raines (Caleb) his siblings, Roscoe (Buzz) Walker III (Kathy), Judith Walker Clark (deceased)(Ray), Nancy Walker Coleman (Greg) various nieces and nephews, and many close friends. Steve was a strong athlete, a musician, a singer, a writer, an academic and most valuable to him, a Rotarian. We hope he is shushing down a double black with his tongue hanging out in utter glee.

I first became a patient of Dr. Walker and his associates in 1990, after my sustaining a "Closed Head Injury" (CHI, as it was known at that time), or "Traumatic Brain Injury" (TBI, as it has come to be known) in a roll-over automobile accident. Without his personal involvement in what was, at that time, a pioneering study of brain injuries, I could very well not be able to live my life without severe complications. He was a rare and truly great person as well as therapist.

Donna,
I'm crushed.
Steve literally saved my life at least !! 20 times.
NO EXAGERATION.
You know me. It was a very hard pull. Steve was always there for me, when i clung to the cliff of life by my fingernails.
I am SO sorry.
I just saw his death posted on his website today. 10/24/2022

Please send me an address where I can send a card.

I heard of Dr. Walker's passing a few weeks ago and have had no idea how to express what he meant and how much he will be missed. He believed in me more than anyone I've ever known and was one of the most generous. Without him, my life would look very different.

I'm glad that he is no longer in pain and that the last time we saw each other we said goodbye to each other knowing that it might be the last time. He will always be remembered and cannot be replaced.

Hi Donna,
I´m just now getting the sad news about Steve. My deepest sympathies to you and your children. Steve was one of my good friends and pledge brother at OU and so kind to my boys and me when we came to visit you all from Texas in Niwot, 10 plus years ago. We had kept up from time to time and I never realized he had this horrible disease. My God bless you and comfort you, as Steve rests in peace. He was a great friend that will be fondly remembered until we meet again in Heaven.
With sadness,
Hoop

Dear Donna, Max and Dominic. Steve was the most sincere man with a true living heart. I always felt so special whenever I was with him. He truly was gracious and strong and smart and added so much to every family gathering. I shall always miss him. His spirit lives on in his beautiful sons and daughter. Love Sue (Kathy's sister)

There is no means by which I can share my grief at the loss of my dear friend/brother Steve. We have been like besties since we met in 1975 at CU, on a project. There has never been anyone like him, that is it! He was the most special person you could have as a friend. He was a God Father to my children. I am relieved Steve is out of the suffering. Go, my dear friend, Say hi to Kat and to Alan, maybe play a round of golf with my Dad. I smile when I think of you now, yes smiles with tears are renewing, you taught me that. I love you,
Steve. Be at peace.
