Clay Byrd Obituary

July 25, 1953 - Dec. 4, 2016

Clay McCoy Byrd passed away peacefully Dec. 4, at his Capay, CA. home. He was born July 25, 1953 in Mt. Vernon, AL.

McCoy was preceded in death by parents, Frank S. and Lettie Christine Byrd; brother, Joseph; stepdaughter, Teffeny Schantz, and granddaughter, Ryan Mariah Smith.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Elaine, and stepson, Keith Schantz. He is also survived by his oldest sister, Hazel Muniz and youngest sister, Debbie Lowell. He leaves brothers, Shelton, Chris, and John Byrd.

McCoy leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins and a large extended family.

McCoy's greatest pride and joy were his son, Anthony and Melissa Roberts (Byrd), and children, Briana and Brayden and his daughter, Alisha Byrd, her children, Jose, Kanon, and Vanessa.

McCoy was a passionate sports fan, loving the Green Bay Packers. He was an accomplished boxer and qualified to represent the United States at the 1972 Summer Olympics. A knee injury kept him from going, but the person he defeated "Sugar" Ray Seales took his place, and won the Gold Medal.

He went to school in Dunnigan and attended high school in Arbuckle. He moved to Tacoma, WA where he worked in a metal foundry.

He returned to California where he worked in a variety of jobs and lived in Colusa and Yolo counties.

McCoy stood out, always wearing western attire; a cowboy hat, western shirt, belt buckle, blue jeans and boots along with a long key chain.

He will be missed for his humor and ability to make people laugh.

McNary's is handling the funeral arrangements. The viewing begins at 10:30 a.m, followed by a service at 11 a.m., on Dec. 20., at McNary's, 458 College St, Woodland. Details of the gathering and celebration of his life will be announced after the service.

Dear friends and family. I send prayers that God will comfort you at your loss. The service was filled with love and hope. The greatest prayer is that McCoy found peace and a heavenly home. The service showed he touched many, was loved and brought joy. God's blessing and love to all.

No poem, just my feeling
Family is all you cared about. True love is all you gave. Letting you go will never be accomplished. My heart aches for you now, and forever. One more day with you is my wish. I'll dream of you often uncle. We'll laugh, and tell stories of days past. Such sweet memories I'll carry with me. Rest in Peace Uncle ...Rest in Peace
