Peter Nelson Obituary

Peter Nelson, 71, of Canal Street, Port Ewen, NY, died Wednesday, November 16, 2022 at Golden Hill Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Poughkeepsie, NY on March 22nd, 1951, a son of the late Donald and Julia (Davis) Nelson. He was a graduate of Lady of Lourdes High School, St. Lawrence University and then SUNY New Paltz where he earned his Master's Degree in Education. Peter was employed as a high school special education teacher for the Hyde Park School District, retiring in 2012. Peter was formerly president of Poughkeepsie Tennis Club, and Toastmasters, fulfilling his passions of tennis and words. Having heard a speech from Peter was always impactful. He was an avid reader who had a book everywhere he went and held lifelong friendships that he valued.He is survived by his wife of 16 years, April Nelson, stepchildren, Robert Brandt III of Port Ewen and Melanie (James) Banks of St. Remy, brother, James (Margaret) Nelson of Poughkeepsie and their children (Peters niece and nephew): James Nelson and Caroline Blackburn, and "Gramp-Pete's" grandchildren, Alyssa Tuturro, Robert Brandt IV and Katelyn Brandt, Michael Banks and Evan Banks, great-grandchildren, Robert Brandt V, Alaila Tuturro, and Leo Nunez.A memorial service officiated by Rev. Dr. David M. Brechter will be held at 3:30 pm on Sunday, November 20, 2022, at the Gilpatric-VanVliet Funeral Home, 339 Broadway, Ulster Park. Family and friends will be received at the funeral home prior to the service on Sunday from 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Peter's memory to his second home, the Town of Esopus Library, PO Box 1299, Port Ewen, NY 12466, or with an act of kindness, Pay it Forward in Peter's memory. Peter was a good friend and coworker in Hyde Park. We always had great conversations about everything from books to baseball. We were both great philosophers. May he rest in peace.

Pete was a dear friend while we attended high school together. Always had a smile on his face and willing ton assist and talk through a problem one had with compassion, understanding and guidance. I am very sad to hear of his passing.
