Alan Schick Obituary

Alan C. Schick Schenectady- Alan C. Schick, 84, died Sunday, May 12, 2024, at Ellis Hospital. Alan was born in Schenectady to the late Walter and Eileen (Joyce) Schick. Alan spent most of his life in Schenectady, graduating from St. Joseph's High School in 1958. Alan attended Mater Christi Seminary and received a bachelor's degree in philosophy from St. Paul's University in Ottawa. He later earned his masters in education from the College of St. Rose.
As a teacher at the former St. Helen's School, for over 40 years, Alan impacted thousands of students, many of whom are still close friends and have frequently stopped by to visit him.
He was always engaged in the community through various organizations. As a volunteer for Home Furnishings he helped many families, who had few resources, obtain donated furniture. For many years, Alan was a leader, organizer, and president for the very successful Concerned for the Hungry campaign that feeds thousands every Thanksgiving. One of his true passions was serving in many capacities with the Boy Scouts of America. He taught and inspired some of our future leaders from Cub Scouts right through Eagle Scouts. He was also very involved at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, primarily in the youth programs.
Alan's efforts and services were recognized by Who's Who among America's Teachers and the Lois Johnson Lifetime Achievement Award from the Schenectady District Twin Rivers Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister; Susan Prasso. He is survived by his brother; Arthur and his wife Audrey (Lauer) Schick of Florida, nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews and their spouses; Jason and Laurie (Burns) Schick and Alex of Virginia, Lann and Jeanne (Schick) Smith and Ella and Micah of Texas, Michael Schick of Connecticut, Sheridan Prasso of Washington, and David Prasso of Arizona. We all want to thank everyone who has provided such loving care to Alan over these many years and all of his wonderful friends. We will miss him terribly.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial, which will be celebrated, Friday, May 17, 2024, at 11 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church, 810 Union Street, Schenectady. Calling hours will be Thursday, May 16 from 5 until 7 p.m. at the Gleason Funeral Home. Entombment will be in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna, following the mass. Memorial contributions may be made to Concerned for the Hungry.

As my classmate Tom Wakeman said below, Mr. Schick was an amazing teacher. He not only was a great teacher of history and social studies, who went well beyond duty for his students, but he was a role model for us to aspire to - how to live your life to help all others. I am so grateful that we re-connected in recent years...though I still had a hard time calling him "Alan"! Mr. Schick was one of a kind. There is a special place for him in heaven. Very few others enjoy that company. Thank you Mr. Schick!

Mr. Schick was one of the best teachers I ever had, particularly in Social Studies and American History, way back in the early 1970s. He taught us to treat everyone we met with respect, and took our class on a couple of memorable field trips - one to Cooperstown (the Farmers´ Museum, not the Baseball Hall of Fame), and to the movie "1776." He made a lasting impression.

Mr. Schick was the reason I became a teacher 22 years ago. As my 6th grade teacher, he was the first adult to truly respect and listen to my thoughts and opinions. He was truly a unique and special man. My condolences to his family

I was a freshman at SJA when Alan was a senior. We had an assignment to write about someone we admired, and I wrote that Alan was my idol. Somehow, he just had that manner... Thank you Alan.

Alan was a very active member of St. John the Baptist community in downtown Schenectady for many years and assisted the many pastors and parish members in its growth. You could always count on Alan to offer his expertise and guidance in liturgical celebrations. He was certainly a man of God and the world was a better place because of his presence. Rest in peace Alan.

Alan your life long friendship has meant so much to me and our St. Helen´s dinner group. You were our historian sharing years of stories and memories of those who passed through the doors of St.Helen´s school. You were a treasure, whose empty seat at the dinner table will be irreplaceable.
RIP dear friend.

I am saddened to hear this. My passion for history, and patriotic love for our country was strengthened by Mr Schick's history classes at St. Helen's School, Class of 1980. May he rest in peace. Michelle Munger Isopo, MSIS Archivist and History Librarian.
