Carmen Ronca Obituary

Dr. Carmen J. Ronca Schenectady - Dr. Carmen J. Ronca, 83, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 5, 2024 in Fort Myers, FL. Carmen was born to Guido and Mary Ronca on April 6, 1941 in Schenectady, NY.
The son of Italian immigrant parents, Carmen was an accomplished student and an outstanding athlete, who received a full scholarship to the University of Pittsburgh for football. After a career-ending injury his sophomore year, he returned to New York to finish his education at SUNY Cortland. He earned his Masters in Education from Union College and after working as a Biology teacher for 2 years he pivoted and attended Dental School at the University of Buffalo. After he completed Dental School, he returned to Schenectady to open his own dental practice on Rosa Road which he later sold and went on to be a founding partner of a group practice in Latham (First Advantage Dental).
He retired at the age of 70 living between NY and Florida. Carmen was married to Andrea (Iovinella) for 57 years and built a beautiful life, and a legacy of hard work and partnership. Together they raised 3 children (Dana, Cara and Gregg) who Carmen adored.
When interviewed later in his life, he recalled his fondest memories were growing up on Rosa Road with his cherished friends from Oneida/Linton. He recollected the joy it brought him to watch his children play sports. Lastly, how grateful he was for the opportunity to become a dentist and how proud he was to build two practices.
Carmen loved all sports, especially golf. He loved being outdoors and going for long walks and bike ride
s. He played pickleball until he was 80 years old. He was a loyal friend, a great listener and a trusted advisor which is why he had so many friends from every part of his life. He was discerning about his friendships and if he considered you a friend, you were a treasure to him.
He was a quiet leader with a commanding presence, admired for his strength and compassion. His achievements in school, sports and professionally far exceeded even his own expectations. Always humble about his hard work and talent, he told each of his children separately "I may not have been lucky in the little things in life, but I was in the big things and that is what made the difference".
A first generation Italian-American who became an extraordinary student and athlete. The student/athlete who became a beloved husband, a revered father, and a loving grandfather (affectionately referred to as "Nonno"). We are sad you are no longer with us on Earth, but we know you are at peace and your unbroken spirit and boundless love will carry us until we meet again.
Carmen is survived by his wife, Andrea (Iovinella) and his brother, Nick. His 3 children Dana (Tom) McDonald, Cara (Brandon) O'Daniell, Gregg Ronca and 4 grandchildren Evan (20), Ella (18), Beckett (8) and Cecilia (7). He was predeceased by his parents (Guido and Mary), nephew (Michael) and granddaughter (Lily).
A mass / memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 20 @ 11 a.m. at St. Anthony's Church in Schenectady followed by a Celebration of Life reception.
In lieu of flowers the family would like donations made to the Alzheimer's Association in memory of Carmen J. Ronca (Tribute page http://act.alz.org/goto/Carmen_J_Ronca).

Well done old Goose Hill team mate. A great life of family, education, and accomplishment. Who knew(then!) what success would come from those many days scrubbing around the rocky dirt bowls at Oneida and Nott Terrace. We are all proud for you and the Ronca name.

The loss of a dear friend brings us closer to the realization of our short time on this earth. I was especially blessed to have someone like 'Carmanooch' be a part of this short time. Our weekly bicycle rides, dinners at each other's home, and his mild mannered golf matches (LOL) will be forever in my heart and thoughts. Rest in peace my dear friend.

He taught my biology class at Central Park Junior High, too many years ago and was a terrific teacher for our over-inquisitive minds. I don't know how he put up with that rabble, but I hope he now rests in peace.

I am saddened to hear of Dr R's passing. We worked together for many years in the same dental office (with a few name changes) in Latham. He shared the love of his family with all his coworkers. So glad he got to enjoy pickleball!
