Debra Bourque Obituary

Debra Ann Bourque graced our world for 59 years as a beloved partner, sister, niece, cousin and friend passing away on February 15, 2016 after a long, courageous battle with ovarian cancer. Debra grew up in Enfield, Connecticut and graduated from Enrico Fermi High School. After serving in the US Army for three years as a Military Policewoman and Military Police Investigator, she relocated to the Albany area. She continued her military service in the Army Reserves and Air National Guard, retiring in 2008 with 26 years of service achieving the rank of Master Sergeant with the 109th Air Lift Wing in Scotia. Some of her assignments took her to Greenland, Antarctica and Kuwait. She worked at the Albany Job Corp from 1980 until 1983 when she completed the New York State Department of Correction Academy and worked as a Correction Officer at several correctional facilities. In 1986 she began working for the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services and was the first woman Senior Training Technician (Police) in the Bureau of Municipal Police. During her career she worked on many programs to include Security Guard Training, Police and Peace Officer Training and Law Enforcement Accreditation; and was instrumental as one of the Coordinators for the State of New York Police Officer Memorial and Remembrance Ceremony from its inception in 1993. She retired from the Office of Public Safety NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services as Administrative Supervisor after 28 years. Debra was the daughter of the late Marilyn and Joseph Bourque and is survived by her partner, Anne; four brothers, Daniel, Jeffrey, David and Robert; Uncle Ray and Aunt Brenda Bourque; cousins, Jane, Carol (Bill), Steven (Edie), Sarah, Rachel, and Darlene (John); her best friends, Gloria, Candace, Joan, Matthew, Joyce, Valerie and Sue; and Sydney, her loving and loyal dog. Debbie touched the lives of many, too numerous to mention. Debra will always be remembered for her strength and determination in life, love of travel and adventure and for always having projects. From tiling her foyer, laying hardwood floors, installing kitchen cabinets, cutting and installing crown molding, to spackling and painting; she did it all. She was an avid fan of the UCONN women's basketball team, the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. Debra's wishes were to be cremated with no formal service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Debbie's name to the Jimmy V. Foundation for Cancer Research, Regional Food Bank and to local animal charities.

Debbie was the best mentor and confidant a person could have. She was fiercely honest and loyal, both in her professional and personal life. A quality that is very rare, especially for someone that was in her managerial position. She fought hard for what and who she believed in. It's hard to believe she's been gone for four years now; as her legacy continues to live on in her work ethic that is simply non-existant in today's work force. A good friend who I respected and I miss her very much.

Debra Jean - I miss you everyday my friend! One of the best people in my life - a wonderful, caring, honest and trustworthy friend and co-worker. The Office of Public Safety hasn't been the same since the day you left. You were a true leader and no one will ever come close to filling your shoes. Always in my heart. Joyce

Debra will truly be missed. From the first time I met her in Charlotte NC I knew she was special. With her big heart and wonderful smile. We became friends instantly real and honest. She invited me to come to New York. So I came up twice over the years. She would plan trips around my visits. We went to Cape Cod , Lake George She always made me feel welcome and apart of her life. Debra was very special to me. I will miss our talks over the phone and christmas cards over the years. A part of my heart is sad now but just knowing how strong and special Debra was makes it better. I remember when talking to Debra on the holidays like thanksgiving she would be preparing dinners for her brothers. She loved her brothers so very much and would be so excited. She made me laugh and smile so much.I will never forget her. She always be a part of my heart. To Ann thanks for letting me know of her passing. I am sorry for your lost. I know she will be watching over us all. Because I believe she got her wings. My God Bless the family

I am so sorry to hear of Deb's passing. We shared many laughs during our years at DCJS. We started the cancer journey together and Deb's optimistic attitude couldn't help but make you feel better. To Ann and Gloria and Deb's brothers and all who loved her, my deepest sympathies. We lost a good one.

Ann, Dan and friends - How lucky we all were to have Deb in our lives and better for it. I will always cherish the memory of her sitting in front of me with that gleam in her eye and that mischievous smile and laugh. She had a way of subtly putting your life back into perspective and turning your day around. She loved you so much. Just know that she will always be close by, whispering words of encouragement in your ear, followed by some funny line with a heartfelt laugh. Lots of love - Julie

We lost a kind and gentle soul with Deb's passing. Deb faced many obstacles during the time she was with us. She nevertheless managed to have an extraordinary life and left the world a better place. Rest in peace, Deb. You did a great job.
