GARY MAHER Obituary

Gary R. Maher, 69, of Burnt Hills, passed away at home on Tuesday, September 20, 2011, after a long illness surrounded by his family. Born in Schenectady on March 3, 1942, he was the son of Raymond J. and Zada V. Maher. Gary attended Mont Pleasant High School and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1959 to 1962. Following his discharge from the Air Force, he became a carpenter for Local 146 and then managed Frankels Speed Shop and Big Daddy's Auto World in Schenectady. He was a long- time member of the Tri City Fly Wheelers, and had a passion for classic cars and hot rods. In 1974 he became a third generation police officer when he joined the Schenectady Police Department. A decorated officer, he received numerous awards and commendations, and in 1988 he was honored as the "Schenectady Law Enforcement Officer of the Year". Gary was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing with his friends and family. He also cherished time spent with his grandchildren and attending their various activities. Gary is survived by his beloved wife, Frances (Fonda) Maher of 48 years; his son, Mark J. and wife, Monica Maher of Ballston Lake; son, Christopher D. and wife, Shanna Maher of West Charlton, and cherished daughter, Darlene M. and husband, Kevin Valade of Ballston Lake, along with his loving grandchildren, Kelly and Jack Maher, Kaitlyn, Justin, and Benjamin Valade, and Christopher and Chase Maher. Gary is also survived by his longtime "coffee buddies", Arnie, Wesley, Ernie, and Al, and his constant sidekick, Murphy. He was predeceased by his parents, Raymond J. and Zada V. Maher, and his granddaughter, Ella M. Maher, in 2006. Funeral service Monday morning 9:30 a.m. at the Daly Funeral Home, 242 McClellan St., Schenectady. Burial immediately following at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna. Calling hours Sunday evening 5 to 8 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations in Gary's memory may be made to the Saratoga Co. Animal Shelter, Ballston Spa, Saratoga County Hospice, or the Ronald McDonald House at Albany Medical Center.
