Mike and Nancy Pitcher Gilbert

March 23, 2022

We are saddened to learn of JIm's passing. He and his wife Ruth, were great friends of my in-laws, Raymond and Doris Pitcher, which is how I met them. Jim was the type of guy who would give you the shirt off his back to help you out. On one visit and the Pitcher's to our house in Barre, Vermont, Jim wanted to know what I was working on in the basement. I told him there was a drain in the floor for a toilet and I was framing in a bathroom for a toilet and sink. I had the toilet and sink, but no plumbing supplies. He wanted to know if I wanted to install both right then. He said he'd just as soon help me do that while he was up for the visit. So, we went to Grossman's and got the supplies he needed and proceeded to the install the toilet and sink that day. I never expected it; he wouldn't take any payment for his labor. I kind of repaid his generosity later while visiting Nancy's parents in Burnt Hills. We all visited Jim and Ruth and they, knowing I did wallpapering on the side (I actually was a high school business teacher) asked if I'd be willing to wallpaper a small of hallway of theirs. We got the paper and done! We had not seen Jim for about four years. The world has lost a great guy.

I knew Jim only from family visits and phone calls (his stepdaughter Judith was my wife of many years) but he always was known to me as the very image of a straight shooter.

Devoted to his family, always willing and able to help whenever called on, always honest and reliable. I'm glad I had the chance to have known him.

My heart hurts for Jim´s family and I couldn´t be more sorry for their loss. Jim was a classic good guy! He stopped by to try out our first backhoe and show my dad a few tips. Jim wasn´t caught up in competition because his work, character, and reputation always preceded him. I´m the blessed beneficiary to have known him. This cause´s me to pause and assess how well I´ve lived my life. The world dimmed for just a moment at Jim Mulvaney´s passing. Thank you for pausing to include me in your life!
