Richard Blackmer Obituary

Richard (Dick) Blackmer passed away peacefully at the Glendale Home, Glenville, NY on November 17, 2016. He was 86. The son of Geraldine and Hardin Blackmer, Dick was born in Klamath Falls, Oregon, and later moved with the family to Redwood City, California. He attended Stanford University and graduated in 1951. While in college, he earned membership in Phi Beta Kappa and Tau Beta Pi. After graduating from college, Dick was hired by General Electric. There he participated in various advanced and creative engineering programs and was appointed engineering manager for the Gemini Space Craft Fuel Cell System. Later, while with the medical development operation at GE, he worked on the development of membrane oxygen enrichers. He held numerous patents through GE and privately. Subsequently, Dick was co-founder of the Oxygen Enrichment Company (OECO) located on Maxon Road in Schenectady. This company, through a license from GE, manufactured machines which provided moist, oxygen-rich air to the homebound who needed supplemental oxygen. Over the years, Dick was an active member in community organizations including Rotary, the Schenectady Light Opera Company and the committee to develop the Mohawk Bicycle Trail. He was also a leader with the Boy Scouts, Alplaus Troop 36. As a longtime member of the First Reformed Church of Schenectady, he served as a Senior Elder and chair of the building and grounds committee. Dick enjoyed adventure and the outdoors, camping, bow and arrow hunting, white water canoeing, windsurfing and skiing with family and friends. He also enjoyed music, from jazz to opera, and dancing with the Benedicts Dance Club. Surviving Dick are his wife, Roberta; their children, Paul (Pamela) Blackmer, John Blackmer and Julia (Gerald) Brannon; and his brother, David. He has five grandchildren and a step-granddaughter, of whom he was very fond. The family wishes to thank the people at Glendale Home who cared lovingly for Dick for nearly two years. A memorial service will be held at the First Reformed Church, 8 North Church St. on Saturday, November 26 at 1 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Reformed Church or the Schenectady City Mission. Mr. Blackmer was someone I always looked up to and admired, a great role model for us kids growing up in Woodhaven. He was also a great friend to my Dad - I'm sure they are now enjoying sailing together once again! His spirit will live on!

Dick gave of himself for many good causes and groups . Ours, The Adirondack Board Sailing Club was just one that Dick supported and enthusiastically promoted. Dick helped secure sailing rights on Sacandaga for the club with the town of Broadalbin and was almost always there for any windy day we had on Saratoga Lake. He had a ready wit ,a big smile and would always step in to help. He was an inspiration to me and many of the younger windsurfers in the ABC. He will be missed. Our condolences, Neil Hannon , president ABC

I am proud to know Dick Blackmer as a friend and mentor. As one of the wild boys of Boy Scout Troop 36, Dick was embraced our young enthusiasm for the woods and waters of the Adirondacks with his own. It was their that I learned the "Blackmer knot," something I use to this day to strap down stuff on my roof rack. We shared a similar enthusiasm for Windsurfing, which brought us together later on in life. He even lent me a spare skeg that he had, and when I asked him if I could buy it, he said, no, just consider it a permanent loan. He never asked for it back. He was that kind of guy, ready to help, loving everybody, and and always looking at "tweaks" to make life's journey a little sweeter. Thanks, Mr. Blackmer, a part of you is in me.

Such sad news to hear about a wonderful man and mentor to us boys growing up in Woodhaven. I will remember Mr. Blackmer as just the nicest guy making time for our Boy Scout outings that always involved nasty terrain and lousy weather. His gentle nature is reflected in his entire family especially his jovial laugh which I am pretty sure Paul and John inherited. My heart felt condolences to his family & friends.
