Richard Leon Obituary

Richard D. Leon, 69, of Glenville, NY and formerly of Haddonfield and Barrington, NJ, died on Sunday, July 18, 2021. Rich was born Feb. 27, 1952, in Philadelphia, to Richard and Catherine Leon and the family settled in Haddonfield, a town that provided him with so many great memories and stories from growing up - and he loved to retell them. Rich enjoyed the outdoors, laughing at life's funny moments, live music, birdwatching, growing sunflowers and tomatoes, playing with his kids and grandkids and perhaps nothing more than a warm wood stove and a quiet evening with the love of his life, Susie. They spent 47 years as husband and wife, a love story that began at Haddonfield Memorial High School in the fall of 1968. In addition to Susie (Hamlin), Rich is survived by his children, Ben (Carrie), of Lincoln Park, NJ, Matt (Adrienne), of Glenville, NY, and Holly Leon-Lierman (Trent), of Greenbelt Maryland; grandchildren Sadie and Evan Leon and Tre and Christian Leon-Lierman; brothers Arthur and John (Susan); sister Rita; his Hamlin family sisters- and brothers-in-law Cheryl and Don Harris, Peggy Cooley, JoAnn and Patrick Burns, Deborah and Randy White, Hilburn and Viola Hamlin; and many cousins, nieces and nephews who he truly enjoyed spending time with and trying to make laugh. He was predeceased by his sisters Nancy, Eileen and Kathleen. Rich attended Christ the King in Haddonfield and graduated from Haddonfield High School in 1970. Some of his best memories were on the hardwood basketball courts of Christ the King and Haddonfield High and blacktops across South Jersey. He attended Glassboro State for three years and took a job as a letter carrier with the Haddonfield Post Office in 1973. He would spend 35 years delivering mail in Haddonfield, retiring in early 2008. Rich served the Post Office with distinction and had so much affection for those who lived on his routes and his union brothers and sisters. Rich and Susie moved to Barrington in 1975 and raised their three children there. He coached many Barrington Little League and Barrington Basketball League teams. In 2010, they moved north to Glenville, NY. He loved South Jersey, but after nearly 60 years there, he enjoyed getting to know a new area, especially exploring the old Erie Canal and the towns along it. Rich was an active volunteer with the Friends of Schenectady County Library and the Schenectady Community Ministries (SiCM) Food Pantry. He answered to many names during his time with us: Rich, Dad, Papa Rich, Papa, Mr. Leon, Uncle Rich and Coach. All who were fortunate to cross paths with him will remember his thoughtful and energetic presence, wise and humorous insight on almost any situation that came his way, and his full heart. A memorial service will be held at Beukendaal Fire House, 501 Sacandaga Road, Glenville, NY 12302, on Friday, July, 23. Family visitation will begin at 3 p.m., service at 4:30 p.m., followed by a reception. A celebration of life in South Jersey is planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Rich's memory to Schenectady Community Ministries (SiCM), 839 Albany Street, Schenectady, NY 12307 (www.sicm.us).

Rich was a great friend through my Christ the King grade school and Haddonfield High School years. We spent countless hours playing basketball together, catching turtles in the local ponds and streams and exploring the outdoors. I remember our times together fondly and always respected him (and looked up to him some since he was a year older) and his life choices, especially his choice of Susie as a life partner. I remember her too as a gem of a person. Rest in peace, Rich, old friend. I chose a career in the outdoors and had chance encounters with your fellow postal workers hiking in "the wilds" of South Jersey, and they mentioned you were still exploring natural areas. Wish we could have bumped into each other sometime and shared a bit about our youthful days together.

I had heard about Rich Leon's passing from my sister Ellen. I want to say to his family and friends I am sorry for your loss. Rich was a year ahead of me at CKS. I was in the same class as his sister Rita Leon in CKS. I have vivid memories of playing intense 1-1 basketball games behind the Haddon Methodist Church with Rich and also Steve Eisenhower who was also a classmate of mine at CKS and later attended Haddonfield High . Rich was a great competitor, and I had much respect for him as a person . I always had to play at 100% because Rich would make you work for every shot every rebound . Rich was just a good guy. Every interaction I had with Rich and any member of the Leon family was always a positive one.

Sister Connie made me aware of Rich´s passing.

Cannot say I personally knew Rich well, but he was a person I always liked and for whom I had great respect. Was a year behind him at CKS and classmate of sister Rita, who also possessed many of the outstanding Leon qualities. We played basketball together at CKS.

Rich had a > keen intellect, great/wry sense of humor and had an authenticity that did not tolerate bs. He was who he was, knew what he liked, and did not let
anything or anyone obstruct those pursuits.

Am certain he was an outstanding husband, father and grandfather and he will be sorely missed.

My sincere condolences to loved ones.

I was sorry to hear about the death of your father, husband, grandfather. You spoke so often to me about how you cherished the time that he spent with you and your family, particularly after he and your mom moved to this area. From his obituary, he certainly lived a very full life. I am sorry for your loss.

Rich was a great basketball teammate at HMHS, at once hard-nosed and unselfish. A rare combination. We didn´t win a lot of games back then, but we never quit, especially Rich. My sincere condolences to Susie, their children, and their grandchildren.

To the Leon Family and Rita, who was always in our home room in HMHS. Got to know Rich when he started working for the PO in Haddonfield. With Bob Flexon, they were probably the most friendly in that location. Also was a Classmate of Peggy Hamlin, who was always super. At first didn't recognize Rich with the white hair but then realized it's been 50 years. Where did the time go? As my mom always said, "Don't cry because it's over rather, smile because it happened" Everyone Stay Safe! Tommy Metts, Stuart, FL.

I have known Rich almost all my life. I remember watching him play basketball for Haddonfield as a little kid and then getting to be friends (although we pretended the opposite) as I grew a little older. I appreciated his humor and I also appreciated how he would drop me an email or text to tell me he enjoyed a basketball write-up of mine he had read online. He was definitely a one-of-a-kind person, with an emphasis on "kind." He will be sorely missed and fondly remembered.
