WILLIAM GUIRY Obituary

William A. (Champ) Guiry, 72, of Loudonville, passed away peacefully on Tuesday evening, at Albany Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Champ was born in Albany and was the son of the late Patrick and Mary Flynn Guiry. He was a 1958 graduate of Albany High School where he was a recognized athlete in both football and track. Champ held the record for New York State broad jump for over 45 years. He served in the U.S. Navy Reserves and was an Albany policeman. Champ enjoyed a long career with the New York State Police and retired as an investigator with the BCI. He belonged to numerous fraternal organizations and was a communicant of St. Pius X Church. Champ's most treasured joy was the unwavering love and support he received from his family and dear friends. He was a proud grandfather who loved to attend his grandchildren's events and activities. Champ is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Betty A. Guiry. He is the devoted father of Patricia (David) Chambers, Dennis (Patricia) Guiry, Coleen (Joseph) Landers, and Scott (Teresa) Guiry. He is the brother of Donald Guiry and the late James Guiry and Toby Stiffen. Champ is the cherished Poppy to David, Kelly, Michael, Patrick, Christopher, Joshua, Megan and Anna. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. at St. Pius X Church, 23 Crumite Rd., Loudonville. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at St. Pius X Church. Interment will follow the Mass in St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands. In keeping with Champ's love for youth and sports, memorial contributions are preferred to the Albany Police Athletic League, 165 Henry Johnson Blvd., Albany, NY 12210. Not sure what to say?

March 12, 2010

Dear Aunt Betty, I am so sorry to hear of uncle Champie's passing. I have a lot of wonderful Christmas memories of the family together. I can still remember grandma telling me the story of when uncle champie told her he was going to marry you someday! My thoughts and prayers are with all of you always, Marie Allyson Guiry-Parker

I met Champ in 1953 when St. Patrick's (PM champions) played Cathedral (AM champions) for the CYO basketball title. It was our "gold medal" game. Even at that age, players spoke of Champ in awe. Before and after the game. Those indelible memories, learning teamwork and good sportmanship are emphasized by Champ's character and personality. From that gold medal day forward, whenever we met,Champ greeted and treated me more as a teammate that an opponent. Most of us lack the knack, but Champ could do that better than anyone. His friendship was not exclusive to athletes either. Shake his hand. Offer a smile. Be good to your parents. Qualifications were rather loose. He was just an easy guy to befriend. That's one reason why the Church was overflowing for his funeral. He was the best guy. Maybe he was Mr. AHS, but may just as well have been called Mr. Albany.
Those of us who saw Champ with track shoes on know he had wings. When the time comes, be certain Champ will put us on his wings and reunite us as family, friends and teammates.
RIP Champ

Dear Dennis & Family, Take comfort in all the memories you have with Champ, they will help you through this difficult time. Our prayers are with you all. Mary Kay & Gary Albert

To the entire Guiry Family,
I first met Champ when we were batboys for the Alb Elks of The Twilight League. What a great guy..... I look back and remember whenever I made a mistake, the players would always say: "your no Champ Guiry". Over the years when we would cross paths, we always shared a laugh about that.
A wonderful guy and a real role model.
Albany will miss one of its best athletes. Our Lord couldn't wait any longer. He needed some help with training in Heaven.
Champ, please take care of my Son Todd
I hope you guys will become fast friends up there. We will all miss you.

Dear Betty & Family
I know it has been many years since we last got together, but like the rest of our long established friends who started their own families and moved from here to there, it was always a great fun time to share with each other
over the close years.
"Champ" was what he was by all who knew him and taking the time to read through the Guest Book, is a great honor bestowed on the person he was.
My Heartfelt sympathy on his passing and he will always remain in my memory and prayers.

Dear Coleen and Family

I know how hard it is to lose a parent. It leaves a big hole in your heart and the only comfort is knowing they're not suffering any more even though we miss them terribly. I didn't know your dad, Coleen; but after
reading all the wonderful things people are saying about him, I wish I had. He was someone you could obviously have been proud of and love very much. I had hoped to see you on Friday but a fever of 102 kept me at home. My heartfelt sympathies go to you and your family. I will keep you all in my prayers.

Love,
Colleen Demers

Dear Betty and Family, I cannot begin to say how much Champ mean't to me in our later years, he made me love golf which help me through my problems when I lost my wife. I wish we were closer when we were young. I truly missed the boat. I used to go to the track meets and stand in awe as he made his broad jump, it was a treat to watch him glide through the air, with his patented pedal step as he jumped. I will miss him greatly not only as he impressed me for his wit but for his love of his family. The world will not be as nice a place without him. Your sadness is also mine. Truly Jere

This message is sent from Myrtle Beach, SC.
I was very saddened to learn of Champ's passing. Champ and I met in high school through our participation in sports--Champ with Albany HS and me with Mont Pleasant HS in Schenectady. We became better acquainted when we traveled together to a couple of state championship track meets while members of the contingent representing Section 2. And while we didn't see each other very often over the years, when we did happen to meet we always had a very friendly exchange as a result of the bond formed from our sports competitions of the late 1950s.
My thoughts and prayers go out to Champ's wife and family. Please accept my sincere condolences.

To the Guiry Family - I lived on North Lake Avenue near Champ's parents; our parents very close friends. I'm really sorry for your loss. He was always a gentleman and a very nice person. I'm sure he will be missed by many.

Dear Betty & Family,
We recall fondly our late night card games with you and Champ, Gene & Jackie and wonder how we ever got home when we stopped playing. Those were great days we will always cherish. We regret that we are unble to attend the services as we are out-of-town.
