William Maggs Obituary

William Earl Maggs Scotia William Will Maggs died peacefully at home in Scotia on November 27, 2014, following a brief illness. Bill was born on February 18, 1924, in Schenectady, New York, to his parents, the late Henrietta and Chester Maggs. He was a graduate of Nott Terrace High School in 1942. Upon graduation, he served in the Army Air Corps for six years through 1948. He married his sweetheart, Margaret Leicht in 1950. He then began his career working with Freihofers and Pepsi Bottling Co. In 1985, Bill opened the Mohawk Card and News which he ran until 1990 when he opened the Village Vacuum in Scotia. During those years he developed many friends and happy customers with his pleasant service and continuous smile. He begrudgingly sold the business and retired at the age of 86. He has been employed by Freeman's Bridge Wine and Liquor since and has shared his wonderful spirit with those fortunate customers he served. Bill loved his family. He invested all of his energy in helping and supporting any family member in need. He continually wanted to be brought up to date on all of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren on any new accomplishments, and never missed sending a card or congratulations on birthdays or other special occasions. He claimed to not care about the New York Yankees, yet he watched every inning of every game. He will always be remembered for his favorite quotes, Takes all kinds, and they're all here; Small world, I'd hate to have to paint it; and Time stands still for no one. Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret (Peg) in 1995. For the past 20 years, he served as a strong patriarch of the family with his constant presence and involvement with his children, grandchildren and great-children. This will be part of his beautiful legacy. He is survived by his children, Kelley (Shelly), Dan (Pam), Tim (Trudy), Kris (Delli), Laurie, Beth (Joe), Pam and Janis; as well as his 21 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Bill was predeceased by his brother, Jack. The family would like to give special thanks to Dairy Circus and Skyport restaurants, as well as to Dr. William Vacca and Dr. Peter Purcell for all the care they have provided over the years, and our dear family friend, Virginia Graney. Calling hours will be held at Bekkering-Ellis Funeral Home, 1 Mohawk Ave., Scotia, New York, on Monday, December 1, 2014, from 5 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph's Church in Scotia, NY on Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be at Park Cemetery, Sacandaga Rd., Scotia, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Schenectady County ARC at 214 State St., Schenectady, NY 12301.
