Albert Lehenbauer Obituary

Albert W. Lehenbauer of Arlington Heights for 12 years Services for the Rev. Dr. Albert W. "Tony" Lehenbauer, 84, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, in St. John's Chapel at the Lutheran Home, 800 Oakton St. Arlington Heights. Born Jan 17, 1918, in Linn, Kan., he died Friday, June 14, 2002, at the Lutheran Home. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery. Upon completing his studies for the ministry, Mr. Lehenbauer became a missionary-at-large, organizing a new mission in Charleston, S.C., and later became the first pastor of Calvary Lutheran Church. In 1949 he served as the school's first principal at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Glen Burnie, Md. During World War II he was a chaplain and contact pastor for the Armed Services Commission of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod. During the early 1950s he served as mission pastor in Annapolis while serving the Naval Academy there and also was a reservist chaplain in the Army. Pastor Lehenbauer went to serve at Our Savior in New Orleans and in July of 1961 accepted the position as Southern District Institutional Chaplain, serving a three-state area. In 1973 he became the executive chaplain in the Northern Illinois District, a position he held until his retirement in 1982. In 1989, he was on staff at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Roselle and retired from that position in February, 2002. Tony is survived by his wife of 54 years, Virginia (nee Hashagen); son, James M. (Pauline) of Indianapolis, Ind.; daughters, Barbara Ellen Lehenbauer of Rockford and Janet G. (Steven) Allmon of Dallas, Texas; grandchildren, Stephanie, Timothy and Jonathan Allmon, and Daniel (Bonnie), Carl, Michael, Laurie and David Lehenbauer; brother, Edward Lehenbauer of Topeka, Kan.; sisters, Anne (the late Maurice) O'Gara of Topeka and Dorothy (the late Theodore) Schoech of St. Louis, Mo. He was preceded in death by two brothers. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today, at the Lutheran Home, 800 Oakton, Arlington Heights. Memorials may be made to the Lutheran Home, Trinity Lutheran Mongolian Mission, c/o Trinity Lutheran Church, 405 S. Rush, Roselle, IL 60172; or Concordia Scholarship Fund, 7400 Augusta, River Forest, IL 60305. Arrangements were made by G.L. Hills Funeral Home, Des Plaines.
