Brian McGrath Obituary

Brian J. McGrath of Batavia Visitation for Brian J. McGrath, 36, will be from 9 a.m. until noon Saturday, at the Norris Funeral Home, 100 S. Third St. (three blocks west of the Fox River, one block south of Route 64), St. Charles. A funeral Mass will be at 1 p.m. at St. John Neumann Church, 2900 E. Main St., St. Charles, with Monsignor Robert B. Hoffman and Fr. James Heyd con-celebrants. Burial will be in West Side Cemetery, Batavia. Born March 25, 1969, in Detroit, the son of Robert V. and Christine M. (nee Scanlan) McGrath, he died Sunday, Oct. 30, 2005, at home, surrounded by his loving family. Mr. McGrath was a graduate of Loyola Academy in Chicago and continued his education at Bucknell University at Lewisberg, Pa., where in 1991, he received his bachelor of science degree in accounting. He served as president of the Bucknell Alumni Club of Chicago from 1996 through 1998. Brian had the unique distinction of having been a member on all three of the major trading floors in Chicago: the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, the Chicago Board of Trade and the Chicago Board Options Exchange. His first job was with Refco, Inc. For a brief time, Brian traded futures and options in the Goldman Sachs Commodity Index. From 1996 through 1999, Brian served as a senior instructor at the University of Trading. In 1998, Brian took a job as a trader with Timber Hill LLC, a proprietary trading firm, based in Greenwich, Conn. Throughout his illness, Brian's work ethic and dedication were an inspiration to the hundreds of people on the board of the CBOE. The CBOE will salute Brian later this week when the American flag will fly at half staff, and the entire trading floor will hold a minute of silence in his memory. Brian was a lifelong Cubs fan who enjoyed baseball and was thrilled that the White Sox won the World Series for Chicago. His sport of choice to play was golf. With his Irish background, he truly appreciated a properly poured Guiness but most of all, Brian loved the company of family and friends. Brian is survived by his wife of six years, Kathleen Quinn McGrath; his 23-month-old daughter, Aisling McGrath; his parents, Robert and Christine McGrath of Inverness; his maternal grandmother, Beatrice Scanlan of Grosse Pointe, Mich.; his siblings, Maureen (Steve) Hahn of Lake Wylie, S.C., Craig McGrath of Chicago, Sheila (Matthew) Edstron of Tower Lake, Michael McGrath of Chicago and Kate McGrath of Chicago; his father- and mother-in-law, Joseph and Louise Quinn of Huntley; a sister-in-law, Theresa (Sandro) Mastrangeli of LaFox; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Joseph Scanlan and his paternal grandparents, Madeline and John McGrath. Contributions in Brian's memory may be made to Provena St. Joseph Hospice, 77 N. Airlite, Elgin, IL 60123 or Wellness House, 131 N. County Line Road, Hinsdale, IL 60521. I didn't know Brian personally, but I had Mrs. (Sheila) Edstrom as a teacher, and if Brian was anything like his sister, he must have been a really wonderful person. Deepest sympathies to the entire family.

We have many wonderful memories of Brian from his days at Loyola Academy. A true and loyal friend, he shared in our son's wedding festivities in Monterrey, Mexico. Our condolences and prayers to all.

Dear McGrath Family,

I am so sorry to hear of Brian's struggle and passing. He and my daughter, Suzy, were graduated from St. Theresa in Palatine many years ago. I saw Brian's smiling Irish face in the paper and remembered the cute kid from STS. What a fine man he had become...may your memories and close family bring you consolation during this difficult time. Hold tight to each other and to the One who holds us near.
