Carrie Dierks Obituary

Carrie Ann Dierks A memorial Mass celebrating the life of Carrie Ann Dierks, formerly of Des Plaines and Evanston, will be held on Saturday, Feb.16, at St. Anne Catholic Community, 120 Ela St., Barrington, Ill. The Reverend John Dewes will officiate. Visitation with family will begin 11 a.m., with the Mass following at noon. Carrie was born Jan. 1, 1960, in DeKalb, Ill., and passed away Jan. 26, 2008, at her home in Decatur, Ga. after a brief illness. Carrie was a graduate of Maine West High School. She attended Bradley University and graduated, cum laude, from Loyola University with a degree in English. She later earned her master of science degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Carrie began her career at Scott, Foresman & Co. as an editor. She then went into freelance writing, until she began working as a project editor for the Field Museum in Chicago. She also worked for the Denver Museum of Natural History, before moving to Georgia to continue her education. In recent years, her extraordinary talent as a writer and exhibit developer for museums all over the United States has been widely respected and admired. In the early 1990s, she co-authored five science books for children. She also was dedicated to volunteering, most recently with Hands On Atlanta, counseling a displaced family who were victims of Hurricane Katrina. Carrie delighted in spending time with her nieces and nephews on her visits home. She is survived by her parents, Diane and Charles Dierks of Marengo, Ill.; her brothers, James (Patricia) of St. Charles and Gregory (Michele) of Geneva; her sister, Joleen (Jon) Batek of Batavia; her nieces and nephews, Ian and Stephanie Dierks, Erik, Alissa, Joseph and Sarah Dierks, and Kevin and Alan Batek; her grandmother, Rose Klier; her aunts, Mary Suzanne and Margaret Dierks; her uncles, George (Carol) Klier and Donald Dierks; and cousins, David (Therese), Timothy, Gary (Annie), Christopher (Maureen) Klier and John (Heidi) Dierks. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Mary and Edgar Dierks and George Klier; her uncle, John Dierks; and nephew, Brian Dierks. Memorials in her memory may be made to United Cerebral Palsy Research and Educational Foundation, 1025 Connecticut Avenue - Suite 701, Washington, DC 20036, or visit www.ucpresearch.org.

I also knew Carry as a fellow poster at the Friendship Garden. Carry was sort of the "Simon Cowell" of the board - always forthright, sometimes ascerbic, often hilarious. Her intelligence showed in all of her posts. We have missed her of late, and now we know why. After reading the guestbook, I wish I could have met her in person. Her nickname on the board was "Caryy, Carry Quite Contrary" but I have a feeling in 3D she was loving and loyal. She spoke very fondly of the little ones in her family.

Carry, many people will keep their memories of you and you will live on in your work. May God bless you and your family with peace and rest.

I am a member of Friendship Garden and Carrie & I discovered that we grew up in the same area and were around the same age. I grew up in Evanston and later lived in McHenry County where her parents live. She knew a lot of my "stomping grounds" and I hers.

Yes, Carrie could be abrasive but I kinda' liked that about her; she'd tell it like it is. That *BS* meter was always working! lol

I am very saddened to hear about Carrie's passing as we all are. RIP Carryotype.

Just today, I found out about Carrie's passing away. I knew Carrie as a member of my Internet forum for many years. Carrie had a way of "telling it like it is" in a way no one else could and a BS meter like no other. She sometimes made people angry as her style was blunt and to the point. But that was Carrie, our "Little Miss Sunshine."

I am very sad to learn of her illness and passing. She will be missed by all who knew her at Friendship Garden.

Dear Dierks Family,

I loved Carrie dearly. She was a great friend to me in high school. Someone to laugh with, confide in. Someone to explore the meanings of life with. I send you love and comfort for your loss. She was a bright spot on the planet.

I just learned of Carrie's death when browsing the Maine West Alumni website. Carrrie and I were friends in highschool as I dated a friend of hers (Jan Henrikson). Carrie was an inspiration to me and is actually one of the people who convinced me that I should go to college. I was a year older than her ('76) and we lost touch but I thought about her from time to time as she had an impact on my life. I am sure she impacted many lives as she did mine. I am sorry for your loss and thankful that I knew her.

Some friendships fade quickly while others endure. I'm grateful that Carrie was part of my life for 24 years, and I feel blessed to have known her. I will miss our phone calls and e-mail messages, and I will especially miss her sense of humor.
