Charlene Yapp Obituary

Charlene Brooks Yapp of Barrington for 36 years A memorial service for Charlene Brooks "Charlie" Yapp, 68, will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, at the Presbyterian Church of Barrington, 6 Brinker Road, Barrington Hills. Born Feb. 12, 1935, in Manhattan, Kan., she passed away peacefully Wednesday, March 12, 2003, after a long courageous battle against large cell lymphoma. Charlie was married to George J. Yapp for more than 46 years and they enjoyed a wonderful life together. They lived at several base locations during George's tour as a pilot in the Air Force, including a two-year assignment in Germany, where their first child, Jeffrey, was born. Returning to the Quaker Oats Company after the Air Force, they lived in Harrisburg, Pa., (Nancy's birthplace), Cedar Rapids, Iowa (Steven), St. Joseph, Mo. (Roger), and Chatham Township, N.J., prior to being assigned to the Quaker Oats Headquarters in Chicago and moving to Barrington in 1967. They also spent six years in London on assignment with the company. Charlie was very active in the communities where she lived and took great pride in her contributions and involvement in the organizations which she served. She was a founding member and past president of the Volunteer Bureau of Barrington, on the board of the Auxiliary of the Countryside Center for the Handicapped, and a member of the Junior League of Chicago, Little Garden Club of Barrington, BAAC, Historical Society, Pi Beta Phi, Hospital Auxiliary, Barrington Fortnightly Assembly, Presbyterian Church of Barrington and the Barrington Hills Country Club. She was an inspiration to her family and friends for her courage, positive attitude and determination to overcome her numerous medical problems over her lifetime. Charlie's focus was never her ailments or how she was feeling, she was always more interested about activities or concerns of others. She had an amazing knack for remembering details and surprising her family and friends with information that had been long lost in their memories. Her good humor, graciousness and genuine concern for others are part of her legacy. Her greatest pride was her family. She also loved to travel, adored her friends and enjoyed entertaining. She focused on the future and in the end was still planning activities for this summer, fall and Christmas. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Survivors include her husband, George, of the home; children, Jeffrey B. (Tamara) Yapp of Matinecock, N.Y., Nancy Y. (Daniel) Hebert of New York City. Steven G. (Margaret) Yapp of Weston, Conn., and Roger D. (Deborah) Yapp of Chicago; grandchildren, Marlo, Mollie, C.J. and Nolen Yapp of Matinecock, Kristine, Ryan and Kelli Yapp of South Bend, Ind., Brent and Charlize Herbert of New York City, Taylor, Kendall and Miles Yapp of Weston, and Brendan and Dylan Yapp of Chicago; and a brother, Miles D. Brooks (Marlene) of Manhattan. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lola O. and Miles K. Brooks, and a sister, Shirley Ann. Visitation for Charlie and her family will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, at Davenport Family Funeral Home, 149 W. Main St. (Lake-Cook Road), Barrington. In lieu of flowers, memorials would be greatly appreciated to the Hospice of Northeastern Illinois Foundation, 410 S. Hager Ave., Barrington, IL 60010; or Lymphoma Research, Northwestern University Medical School, in honor of Charlene B. Yapp, Office of Development, Abbot Hall 1312, 710 N.
