Gordon Volling Obituary

Gordon A. Volling of Antioch Funeral services for Gordon A. Volling, 93, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday July 29, at the Strang Funeral Home of Antioch, 1055 Main St. (Route 83), Antioch, with burial to follow in Hillside Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., with Masonic services at 7 p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home. Born Aug. 7, 1915, in Grant Park, Ill., the son of the late August William and Alvina Marie (nee Blanke) Volling, he passed away Saturday, July 25, 2009, at his home. As a young man he worked on the Hallock Farm, which is now part of the Wauconda High School property and the Historical Society building. He played baseball for the Volo Bears in the 1930s. During this time he met his future wife, Laurene Keisler at Dietz's Stables, where he was a square dance caller. He left the farm to work as a crane operator for the ACME Steel Co. and later for the American Locomotive, where he also was president of the United Mine Workers of America Union Local. He established ACME Electric, until moving to Antioch in 1947, where he and his wife founded Antioch Electric Service. He traveled during that time also installing milk vending machines throughout the U.S. He retired in 1978 at the age of 62, spending many years during the winter months in Boynton Beach, Fla. Gordon also enjoyed managing Little League baseball and had installed the original field lights, donating much of the labor. In addition to playing baseball, he enjoyed golf, shuffleboard, bingo, card playing and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. He also was a life member of the Sequoit Masonic Lodge #827 A.F. & A. M. On Sept. 2, 1939, he married Laurene M. Keisler in Wauconda, and she preceded him in death after 59 years on May 23, 1999. Gordon will always be remembered as a wise, caring, thoughtful, proud and loving husband, father, and grandfather. He leaves to cherish his memory three sons, Gordon K. (Kathleen) and Dennis R. (Kathleen) both of Antioch and Bruce A. (Kathryn) of McIntosh, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Evelyn, Annabelle and Mary; and his dear friend, Beverly Sorensen. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Gayle Volling; two brothers, Clifford and Frank; and two sisters, Leona and Pauline. Friends desiring may make donations, in his memory, to the Antioch Rescue Squad or Antioch Fire Department. Please sign our online guest book for Gordon at www.strangfh.com.
