JAMES W. MOULDER

James W. Moulder of Vernon Hills James W. Moulder, 90, who passed away on Thursday, May 6, 2011, was a microbiologist at the University of Chicago for over 40 years, beginning after he finished his doctorate in biochemistry at the institution in 1946. Professor Moulder performed groundbreaking research on many infectious and parasitic diseases and served as chairman of the University's Bacteriology and Parasitology Department, and later the Microbiology Department. During his long career, Dr. Moulder was a Guggenhein Foundation fellow and a senior Fulbright scholar at the University of Oxford from 1952 to 1953. He received the Eli Lilly Award in bacteriology and immunology in 1954 and was editor of the Journal of Infectious Diseases from 1957 to 1968. After retiring from the University of Chicago and being honored as a Professor Emeritus in 1986, Professor Moulder and his wife, Della, moved to Tucson, where he advised students and faculty at the Department of Microbiology and Immunology of the University of Arizona until 1998.He received the Bergey Medal in 1999 for his lifelong contributions to the field of microbiology, including research that led to crucial advances in the prevention and treatment of yellow fever, malaria and chlamydia. Outside the laboratory, Dr. Moulder enjoyed camping, world travel, classical music, and furniture-making. He was warmly regarded by his legions of doctoral advisees and students, many of whom continued to correspond with and visit Professor Moulder longer after graduating from the university. Professor Moulder weathered the loss of two daughters, Carol and Linda. He returned to the Chicago area several years after his wife's death in 1994, to live closer to his daughter, Susan, and her family. Surviving are his children, John Moulder (Joan Dimow) of Milwaukee and Susan (Scott) Perlman of Libertyville; and five grandchildren, Brian Hubbell, David Kopsa, Benjamin, Mary "Becky" and Laura Perlman. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dolly "Della" Moulder; and his daughters, Linda and Carol. Private services are from the Burnett-Dane Funeral Home Ltd., Libertyville.
