Roger Maritote Obituary

Roger F. Maritote of Roselle Services for Roger F. Maritote, 75, a well- known and highly respected attorney in Chicago, will begin at 9 a.m. Thursday, at Salerno's Rosedale Chapels, 450 W. Lake St. (3/4 mile west of Bloomingdale Road), Roselle. Mass will follow at 10 a.m., at St. Walter Church. Mr. Maritote passed away Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at his home. Interment will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery. Mr. Maritote was raised in the Italian-American community on Chicago's West Side. A graduate of St. John's Military Academy in Delafield, Wis., he spent a year in the Army at the close of World War II, serving in the European-African-Middle Eastern theater. Upon his discharge from the military, Mr. Maritote enrolled at Marquette University, graduating with a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1950. Three years later he received his L.L.B. and juris doctor degrees from DePaul University and was admitted to the Illinois State Bar Association. In 1953 Mr. Maritote married Dorothy Jean Gugel, who was a head nurse in the pediatric ward at Cook County Hospital. The couple raised five children and Mr. Maritote believed his greatest accomplishment was sending them all through college. In 1960 Mr. Maritote was admitted to practice law before the U.S. Supreme Court and the U.S. Court of Military Appeals. Mr. Maritote was very active in both his community and his profession. From 1963 to 1973 he served as chairman of the Zoning Board of Appeals in Roselle. In 1979 he was elected president of the Justinian Society of Lawyers. He was also a member of the DuPage County Bar Association and the American Judicature Society. He ran his own law practice in Chicago for nearly 40 years. An avid golfer, Mr. Maritote won several amateur tournaments, including ones sponsored by the Chicago Bar Association and the Justinian Society of Lawyers. He was the beloved husband of Dorothy (nee Gugel); devoted father of Frank (Judy), Mark (Chrys), Regina, John and Gloria (Steve) Stathos; fond grandfather of Rosemary, Roger, Ryan, Tyler and Ginamarie Maritote and Mark and Stephanie Stathos; and dear brother of Theresa Navarro, Frances (Frank) Rolla, Candy and Frank (Lena) Maritote. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home. Friends may visit www.dailyherald.com/obits to express condolences and sign the guest book.
