WILLIAM DIVANE Obituary

LONG GROVE - William T. Divane III, age 53, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on January 28, 2019 following a devastating accident. Family meant the world to Bill, a gifted, compassionate and generous man who had an uncanny ability to make everyone around him feel welcome and well-loved. Bill's trademark beaming smile and boundless energy lifted hearts. He challenged minds, whether he was coaching clients as a clinical psychologist or counselling students at a university center. Bill always took time to listen to, engage and empower others with his wise advice and witty humor. Bill adored his wife and two children and felt blessed by the full life he shared with them. He was a devoted husband and nurturing father who encouraged them all to reach beyond themselves. "Reaching beyond" defined Bill's life, from his undergraduate years at Georgetown University to his doctorate at the Illinois School of Professional Psychology to a leadership role as President of Divane Brothers Electric. A world traveler, avid reader and outdoor enthusiast who enjoyed hiking, biking, swimming and backpacking, Bill was intellectually curious, spiritually driven and unconditionally selfless. Bill is survived by his wife of 20 years, Suzanne, and children, Maddie and Ian; his parents, William and Jean Divane; his mother, Katherine Conley; his brother, John Lincoln (Vicki), sister, Cathy Bonaccorsi (Tom); stepsisters, Theresa Frumkin (Kristian) and Sarah Gramer; and stepbrother, Brendan Gramer (Laura). He is the loving uncle of 11 nieces and 12 nephews as well as a world of extended family and friends who will miss him dearly. Bill left us too early, but his light and love will touch us for a lifetime. Visitation is from 2-8 PM Tuesday, February 5, 2019 at St. Mary of the Annunciation Church, 22333 West Erhart Rd., Mundelein. Funeral mass is 10 AM Wednesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made to Catholic Charities. For information, visit www.kristanfuneralhome.com or call 847-566-8020.

Bill was the first Psychologist hired to work at Albion College during my 21 years there. As the architect who built the base of what remains an extraordinary Counseling department, he gave much of himself. He structured the department with extraordinary expertise, love, and devotion so it was bound to endure. He also cared about all of us - students whom he helped, his colleagues, and the College. And Suzanne, I have many fond memories of Bill, you, and your children. I remember you bringing Maddie to see me in her Halloween costume - a bumblebee, and seeing Ian soon after his birth. I remember thinking how so like Bill he looked then. I last spoke with Bill on my visit to Lake Forest College. So many years later, I feel his loss. I pray for all of the Divane family and extended family. Much love, Sally Walker (Albion, MI)

Bill was one of the first people I regularly saw at Lake Forest College - we worked in the same building when I began working there. I have dozens of fond memories of talking about life, the universe, and everything with Bill - and talking about how we could address the kinds of anxieties that prey on young people in the 21st century. He was a good man. I've missed having him as a colleague, and I am so saddened that he is no longer among us doing the work he did so well. - Holly Swyers

Dear Bill,

If I felt capable of composing words that would bring you peace and comfort at this moment, I would do so. I do pray, however, that with the passage of time, you will find peace and comfort, and pride as well, in reflecting upon the blessing of being the father of an extraordinary person: William T. Divine III. May The Lord bestow special graces upon you and your family.
