Stanford Zukin Obituary

Stanford Roland “Stan” Zukin, 77, of West Chester, PA, died peacefully at home on January 15, 2018, with his family and dearest friends surrounding and embracing him. Born in Philadelphia, PA, on August 27, 1940, to parents Solomon and Rose (née Garland), Stan grew up in a loving family with his devoted older sister, Marcia, and identical twin brother, Ronald. From the time they were born and well into their adulthood, Stan and Ronald shared a communication that was almost telepathic and a love for mischief that was always undone by their wry but contagious full-face smiles. When he was thirteen, Stan met the love of his life, his guiding light, Elsa (née Rothstein). Stan spied Elsa at the corner candy store in Philadelphia’s Logan neighborhood and he was hooked. Following their courtship through their teens at Olney High School, Stan and Elsa married in 1961. Their connection somehow was deeper than a marriage. They were bonded, cemented, affixed and attached to one another. Stan and Elsa were each other’s brace, buoy and biggest fan. A graduate of Temple University’s School of Pharmacy in 1962, Stan along with his brother, Ronald, also a graduate of Temple, bought Thatcher’s Pharmacy on Market Street in West Chester in 1966. Stan always said that his customers were like his extended family. Later, the pharmacy was moved to its expanded location at Gay and Walnut Streets. At age 55, Stan retired from practicing pharmacy and expanded his already-successful real estate holdings in West Chester and surrounding communities. At around the same, Stan’s son, Wayne, a recovering lawyer, began his own real estate development business in Philadelphia with his dad as his lead investor. Stan’s other son, Scott, left his cabinetmaking profession to help Stan grow Zukin Realty and transform West Chester into the thriving community that it is today. Daughter Lori embraced her father’s entrepreneurial spirit and created Zukin Leadership specializing in executive coaching and leadership consulting. Stan’s three children look forward to working together to continue what their father began. Just a few weeks ago, Stan looked out across the sea of broad smiles on the faces of his three beloved children — Wayne (Sue Smith); Scott (Jeanenne Browning); and Lori (Michael Rotker) and seven adored grandchildren (Max, Isaac, Lily, Evan, Adam, Rose and Mark), swung his head from side to side in contentment and awe, took Elsa’s hand and said “Look at us, Bubby. We’re just two pishers from Logan. Look at what we made.” Right up until the end, when Stan and Elsa walked down a street or a corridor or just about anywhere, they always held hands. Relatives and friends are invited to his Funeral Service at 11:00am on Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at Beth Chaim Reform, 389 Conestoga Rd. Malvern, PA 19355. Interment will follow at Haym Solomon Cemetery, 200 Moores Road, Malvern, PA 19355. The family will be sitting Shiva immediately following the interment, and each day for a week from 3:00 PM - 7:00 PM at the home of Stan and Elsa Zukin, 611 North High Street, West Chester, PA 19380. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Beth Chaim Reform Congregation and/or Chabad Chester County and/or David Ari and Michael Eric Zukin Religious School at Kesher Israel Congregation and/or in support of prostate cancer research, to the Brady Urological Institute at Johns Hopkins University. I am saddened by the news of Stan's passing. I worked for Ron and Stan a long time ago and they treated me with respect and love. Their parents were wonderful people and I felt like part of the family. It's been years since I saw Stan but I will always have a special spot in my heart for him.

I've known Stan's family since 1966 when his eldest son, Wayne, & I began Nursery School together at Friends Community. He and Elsa were a loving couple for their entire lives together and inspiration to their kids and everyone lucky enough to know them. I send love, condolences and my deepest sympathies to the Zukins...truly "Chester County Royalty" in large part to the affection and enthusiasm Stan had for the community.

One of the experiences in my life that I am most grateful for is the time I spent working for Stan and Zukin Properties. Stan, thank you for the opportunity that you gave me when I was just a young college student. Who would've thought that I'd come full circle and get into real estate fifteen years later? I often think about you, and I will never forget you. You're an inspiration to me.

Stan and I shared a passion for horology, the study of timepieces. He collected them, and I did my best to keep them running properly. Through the last 10 years or so I knew him, he began to call me "Friend" and I know he truly meant it. He and Elsa treated My wife, Lisa, and I like family. Through a lifetime of hard work he became very successful, but never forgot where he came from, and always treated everyone with respect and dignity. He was a truly humble person who made you feel as if YOUR dreams and aspirations were just as important to him as they were to you. And while he collected many timePIECES, he always knew that TIME was the most important thing we can give to one another, and he made sure his family had as much of his time as he could give them.
Rest in PEACE, my Friend. Elsa and your family will always have you in their hearts, and your strength and courage will always be an inspiration to us all. George and Lisa Morrison

Condolences to his friends and family. Stan used to hire myself and Dave Ramsey when we were teens to do odd jobs around his house and properties for him. Then hired me in my early 20's at the drug store. Always had great respect for him. RIP Stan.
