Thomas Froio Obituary

Thomas L. Froio of West Chester Thomas L. Froio, 65, passed away on Monday, December 12, 2016 at Paoli Hospital after an unexpected illness. He was the beloved husband of Kimberly Ann Howard Froio, with whom he shared 40 years of marriage. Born in Blue Island, Illinois, he was the son of Rev. Deacon Lawrence P. Froio and the late Suzanne J. Matzinger Froio. Tom graduated from Great Valley High School in 1969, and St. Joseph’s University in 1973. In college, he was the first person ever to achieve academic All-America® honors for St. Joe’s in baseball. He was also inducted into the West Chester Adult Baseball League Hall of Fame in 1997. He worked for Conrail for 19 years as a controller and then went on to pursue private consultant work. He was employed by Mannington Mills in Madison, Georgia up until the time of his passing. Tom was often seen on the sideline as a coach for his children, with West Chester United Soccer Club, West Side Little League, Babe Ruth League and Exton American Legion. He enjoyed many years of bowling with the Howard’s Auto Parts team on Friday nights. He was an avid Philadelphia sports fan, and also of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Tom always did whatever he could to support his family. He was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather and brother. In addition to his wife and father, Tom is survived by his six children, Vincent (Megan), Daniel, Gregory (Danielle), Krista (Matthew) Houpt, Anthony and Nicholas; and five grandchildren, Brayden, Luca, Matilyn, Gianna and Hudson. He is also survived by his brothers, Joseph (Donna) and Michael (Ann) and a host of in-laws, nieces and nephews. In addition to his mother, he was predeceased by his father-in-law, Clifford Howard, and mother-in-law, Nancy Shank Howard. An evening viewing will be held from 5:00-8:00 pm, Thursday, December 15, 2016 and again from 8:30-9:45 am, Friday, December 16, 2016 at the James J. Terry Funeral Home, 736 E. Lancaster Avenue, Downingtown. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, December 16, 2016 at St. Patrick Church, 104 Channing Avenue, Malvern. Interment will be in Philadelphia Memorial Park, Frazer. I've just leaned about this. I was inducted into St Joe's Baseball Hall of Fame in April 2016. I met up with several teammates from St Joes from that time period. Was hoping that I would see Tom there.

Have great memories of him as a classmate and teammate. He was a great defensive catcher and clutch hitter.

Wish I had maintained contact with him after graduating St Joe's in 1973.

Dearest Kim and Family, We were so saddened to hear about Tom's passing. We were at the St. Joe's Baseball Hall of Fame Induction this past Saturday evening, January 14th when we received the sad news from Harry Booth, Rick and Tom's coach from St. Joes. Rick was being inducted and had memories in his speech about dear Tom, whom we both remember with such fondness. Even after hearing the sad news, Rick wanted to "honor" Tom by keeping those words in his speech. So, many, many dear people were talking about your Tom. Rick had a lot of cute, funny stories to tell about the things Tom would say to him to calm him down when Rick was on the mound and Tom was behind the plate. How I wish you could have been there....but, in truth, both you and Tom were in the thoughts and prayers of many St. Joe's grads, all of whom reminisced about Tom with his humor and humanity. Please know that you, Vince ( whom we remember from Richmond, where our son, Tim, played ball with him ), and all of your dear kids are in our every thought and prayer. We cannot imagine this world without Tom and as Earth has lost a dear soul, Heaven has gained one. May God bless you with some measure of peace and joy and know that so many out there loved Tom so much. Love and sympathy, Rick and Becky Stauffer and Family Saratoga Springs, NY

Dear Kim and the Froio Family,
Our heartfelt condolences to everyone on your loss. Our memories are deep. So many thoughts about Tom and his commitment to the West Chester United Soccer Club, team Hawks - the extraordinary time dedicated to the sport, the camaraderie he fostered amongst our sons, and the parental team spirit he helped develop through his exemplary efforts. Although the days of us watching the games and cheering for our sons on the pitch are long gone, the memories will remain with us forever. Sending our love and thoughts to all.
