Dr. Ashok Kumar Jain

Dr. Ashok Kumar Jain was born in Sialkot, India in October 1946 before The Partition. He grew up in northern India and attended the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. He met his wife of 54 years, Dr. Reena Jain, while in medical school. Upon graduation they married and moved to Rochester, New York for internship and residency training. Thereafter, they moved to Nova Scotia, Canada for fellowship training. He spoke fondly of his time in Rochester and Nova Scotia. They eventually moved to Redding, California in 1977 and Ashok took a position as one of the first neurosurgeons in northern California. He worked as neurosurgeon in private practice in Redding for 33 years prior to his retirement in 2010. Ashok loved Redding. He enjoyed biking on the river trails with his children, Neelam and Sasha, going to the lakes, and taking scenic drives to the mountains. He was active in the Redding Rotary Club and enjoyed playing golf with his children. He was a voracious reader and enjoyed reading multiple books at the same time. His knowledge base of information on history, politics, art, music, education, photography, and geography was vast. Ashok was a champion of education and a patron of the arts with a keen ear for music and interest in art. He enjoyed taking his family on trips around the country to see art exhibitions. He is survived by his wife Dr. Reena Jain of Germantown, Tennessee, daughter, Dr. Neelam Jain (Eric Weber) of Germantown, Tennessee, and son Nitin (Sasha) Kumar Jain of Austin, Texas as well as his five grandchildren: Devi, Tej, and Rishi Weber and Leila and Mila Jain. Ashok is also survived by his older brother Charanjit Roy Jain (Prem) as well as four nieces and two nephews. The family would like to extend their sincere love and gratitude to Doc's amazing caregivers who took care of him for the past several years: Jaquita, Rosalyn, Willie, Louise, Jada, and Keosha.
