Mr. Charles played sax in a band with my dad, Jack Lawson, in the 1980s. As a child, my memories of him are fixed: a man possessed with so much talent, elegance and cool-quiet charisma who was impossible not to notice or appreciate, even for an unstudied boy like me. He was a master musician, and someone who inspired me to play music for myself. The world is richer for the notes he played.
Sending love on behalf of my family to his. We are grateful to have known Charles Skurlock. XO

Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Mr. Charles Scurlock:
I'm deeply grateful for the profound impact Mr. Charles Scurlock had on my life. As my sixth-grade band teacher at Chicot County School District, he ignited a passion for music that has endured. His exceptional musicianship, outstanding teaching, and calm demeanor earned him widespread respect and admiration.
Mr. Scurlock's vast knowledge of jazz, classical music, and the arts was truly remarkable. As I transitioned from student to fellow band director, our conversations evolved into enriching discussions about music education, literature, and best practices. I cherish memories of attending concerts with him, including the Overtone High School Band Concert and live jazz performances.
Mr. Scurlock's dedication to his students extended far beyond the classroom, fostering lifelong connections that transcended geography. His influence on countless students in southeast Arkansas and Memphis is immeasurable, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of musicians and educators.
To the Scurlock family, my wife and I offer our heartfelt condolences. May you find solace in the knowledge that God's love and grace will surround and sustain you. Mr. Scurlock's memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those he touched.
