Christopher Packard Obituary

Christopher "Chris" Sanner Packard passed away on August 6, 2025, in Memphis, Tennessee, surrounded by his family, after a brave battle with illness. Chris valued being a devoted father. The deep grief his children feel in his absence is a testament to his steadfast love, guidance, and support. Born in Erie, Pennsylvania, Chris spent his youth by the lake, where he developed a lifelong love of the outdoors. For the past 38 years, he made Memphis his home. He cherished time spent fishing, hunting, and exploring nature with those he loved. Chris dedicated his professional life to mental health services, working as a counselor, supervisor, manager, and program administrator. He was especially proud of his 28 years of service with Shelby County, where he supported others through the Employee Assistance Program, the Division of Corrections, and the Sheriff's Critical Incident Team. He also mentored graduate students at the University of Memphis. Both personally and professionally, Chris cared deeply about ensuring others felt safe and heard. A lifelong learner, Chris taught himself to read at the age of four and never stopped. His endless curiosity gave him a broad worldview and a deep compassion for others. Known for his immense vocabulary, he spoke with increasing passion and precision when discussing subjects close to his heart. He was a master of crosswords (always in ink) and a formidable Scrabble player. Chris will be remembered as a hardworking man, a great listener, and someone whose dry sense of humor often gave way to playful goofiness. He valued art in its many forms: through paintings, cooking, music, movies, and literature. He also pursued his love of golf, always searching for the perfect shot. More than anything, Chris had a gift for making small, ordinary moments feel meaningful. His presence will be deeply missed, but his spirit lives on in the hearts of those who loved him. He was preceded in death by his mother, Shirley. He is survived by his wife, Beth; his children, Elizabeth and Wyatt; his brother, Rev. Walter Packard of Erie, Pennsylvania; and his uncle, Raymond (Marie) Sanner, also of Erie. A visitation will be held on October 18, 2025, from 11:30 to 12:00 p.m., followed by a funeral Mass at noon at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Foundation, Inc. (TWRF) and The Salvation Army.
