David Meyer Obituary

Dr. David Meyer, age 81, died on Saturday, August 17, 2019, after braving his days in an extensive stay at Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis.

He was born in Nashville, Tennessee, on February 2, 1938, to the late Sara and Henry Meyer. As a child, David developed a strong curiosity about animals and a love of nature, often collecting creatures and bringing them home to the dismay of his mother. This appreciation for the natural environment and the joy he experienced within it threaded throughout his life.

From 1954-1959, he attended Vanderbilt University and received a Bachelor of Arts in Biology. Initially, he considered veterinary school but then chose to attend the University of Tennessee College of Medicine, in Memphis, where he graduated with a Doctor of Medicine. His postdoctoral training was robust and included St. Thomas Hospital, University of Pennsylvania, Wills Eye Hospital, Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary at Harvard University, and University of Bonn in Germany.

Dr. P. Robb McDonald and Professor G. Meyer-Schwickerath inspired David to specialize in the treatment of retinal diseases. Colleagues in the field considered him a pioneer, based upon his innovation of technique and unwavering commitment to perfecting his approach to medicine.

Most outstanding in his career as a retinal surgeon was his exceptional standard of care to his patients, where he valued the physician-patient relationship above all else; here is where he brought humility, humor, and devotion to those he considered family and friends. To David, a patient was never a number but always a human being first who deserved equitable treatment and respect.

A passion close to his heart and life-long mission was his involvement in early intervention treatment of children suffering from retinoblastoma at St. Jude's Children Research Hospital. He recognized the vulnerability of these young patients and used his expertise to improve the quality and longevity of their lives.

As a prominent figure in the advancement of patient care in vitreoretinal diseases, he also contributed enormously through publications, lectures, and training of fellows throughout his lifetime. Although his primary identity was that of a retinal surgeon, David was ignited by the idea of using his love of science to aid in humanitarian efforts by developing a genetic engineering program on a track of land he purchased in the early 70's. This was the initial evolutionary stage of what is now known as Spring Creek Ranch. After a chance meeting with Jack Nicklaus in 1996, Dr. Meyer made the decision to transform the preexisting land of Spring Creek Ranch into one of the premiere golf facilities in the country. This endeavor was yet another example of his commitment to excellence, legacy, and preservation of nature.

Left to uphold his memory and life are his devoted wife of 57 years, Lynn, his three children, Margaret, Elizabeth, and Robb, his granddaughter, Dylan, and his sister, Eileen Chalfie.

To honor the complexity and outstanding work of this unique man, a memorial will be held this upcoming Sunday, August 25, beginning at 2:00pm, at Spring Creek Ranch (376 S. Collierville-Arlington Road).

The Meyer family would like to extend a sincere, heartfelt thanks to each individual connected to David's circle of care at Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis for their unparalleled service, warmth, and love.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center, the Equal Justice Initiative, and Church Health Care Eye Clinic in Memphis, Tennessee.

Not sure if he was the doctor at small hospital in Memphis where he called me to be private nurse to Elvis Presley. So not sure if he is this one. I pray for comfort for family and his soul to rest in peace. He was a strict but great eye MD with many success stories on eye surgery.

I just stumbled across this obituary on 3/4/2025. Long ago I was unlucky enough to need Dr. Meyer's services, and lucky enough to get them. It was late on a Friday night in early February 1987. I had noticed a blind spot in the peripheral vision of my left eye, and when it was brought to the doctor's attention, he dropped everything and met me at the hospital for emergency surgery to repair a detached retina. May he rest in peace.

Dr. Meyer was truly one of God´s Angels sent to work for Him here on earth! I have never know a doctor more dedicated to his patients, working long extensive hours but giving each person his full attention and service. My father was diagnosed with a tumor in his eye & was given 6 weeks to live. Dr. Meyer took the challenge to help my father fight this battle. His amazing abilities kept my dad with his eye for almost 7 more years before he finally lost (only) his right eye. My father lived 24 more years before his heart finally stopped beating. That was 24 years of life Dr. Meyers gave us with my dad, who was also a husband, a grandfather, and a friend to many. How do you repay or even thank someone for a gift like that??? So often you could easily forget Dr. Meyer was such an incredible doctor, because he always made you feel he was your best friend first! Dr. Meyer is one individual that will truly be missed not only for his knowledge, works and good deeds but as a friend indeed! May you be in God´s Glory FOREVER!

I only learned of Dr. Meyer´s passing today (4/13/23) 26 yrs after he saved my left eye that suffered a trauma due to an auto accident in near Cape Girardeau, MO in March 1996. He was like a rock star to his patients and staff. He was a gifted surgeon who prevented thousands of human eyes from going dark permanently.

I just learned today of Dr. Meyer´s passing and wish to convey my greatest condolences to his family. Dr. Meyer saved my sight through surgery many years ago and I had the major privilege of working for him as part of the office staff. His devotion to his patients was second to none and his genius was apparent to anyone who worked for him. He genuinely cared for each patient and had great compassion and generosity. He will be greatly missed.

David was a fraternity brother of mine at Vanderbilt University. A ZBT, upper-class man who was an example to his younger brothers.

Dr. Meyer saved the sight of my deceased husband, my deceased father and my young son who had an accident. There are so many Dr. Meyer stories. The one I like to remember is the one when he bought a new vehicle and it had ONSTAR that Mrs. Lynn insisted on. He didn't like to spend money on the extras "stuff". One night he was driving and it was late and dark and he could not find the way - he pushed ONSTAR and they talked him to his destination. He said thank goodness he had that feature.

He was my hero and you know going in that it would be an all day event. That was ok - we waited on the best!!!

Prayers of comfort.

Dr Meyer had a way of making me feel like a friend by calling me by my first name, Beverly and I always appreciated that. He gave me hope after I had been told many years ago that I would one day be blind. My decades with Dr Meyer made my outlook on life better even though my sight continued to decline. I will miss him. I hope to see him with perfect sight in the great beyond.
God bless all family and friends in this loss.

Dr. Meyer, Big Man With an Entourage, is how I like to refer to him. He corrected my fathers detached retina in 1975, way before we now realize what was possible back then. He was a genius. Not sure what his IQ was, but Im specing it was close to 200. He would burst into daddys room, puppy dogs on his trail. They were the unfortunate interns whod been assigned to the famous Dic whod invented the tool that would change the lives of . . . Im sorry, I dont know how many lives he changed. Perhaps someone out there knows. Perhaps.

Such a caring Doctor. I was a caretaker of his patient Mrs. Janis Cherry. He was always so helpful to her and her understanding of his treatments. Always spoke of his wife and family. We loved his dedication and determination to heal. He was a Doctor for two of my family. What love he shared to all and he was loved dearly. Rest in peace Dr. Meyers.

So sorry to hear of your loss. David always treated me with the ultimate respect even though he was much more intelligent than I ever could have imagined. I truly enjoyed his years of work with us in Paducah, Ky. Our shared patients truly thought that every word he spoke was gospel and he made every patient feel like they mattered. Thank you as a family for sharing him with us.

Dr Meyer treated my husband who passed a couple of years ago. My husband did not really care for Drs, but he liked Dr Meyer. Dr Meyer gave him hope and made him feel like he was important. Dr Meyer truly treated not only the disease, but the patient. Outstanding doctor! Peace and comfort to his family.
