Donald Horton Obituary

Donald Edward "Don" Horton (Poppy) of Eads, TN, peacefully passed away at the age of 94, surrounded by his loving daughter and granddaughter on April 20, 2024.

Don leaves behind a daughter, Kristi Horton, a son, Chad Horton, four beautiful granddaughters, Emory Endicott, Taylor Horton, Anna Grace Horton, and Mattie Horton, a brother, Neil Horton, as well as many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his beautiful wife, Mary Ann Horton; his parents William Monroe & Ocal Elizabeth Horton; his siblings, Virgil Horton, Helen Shumate, Hope Dunlap, and Lila Hill.

Don was born in the coal mining town of Crab Orchard, W. Va. on April 10, 1930. He attended West Virginia University (now Univ. of W. Va.) and graduated on June 2nd,1952, with his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy. He met his loving wife, Mary Ann Horton, in the New York City area. After they married, they moved to Memphis, TN to begin their new adventure of life together. They lived in Cordova, Germantown, and eventually built their forever home in Eads, TN. He worked as a pharmacist for many years in the area and owned his own pharmacy in Germantown, TN, called Super D before retiring in 1997. He and his wife donated to multiple local charities for many years and sponsored his daughter's soccer team.

Don loved his home and never wanted to leave. He enjoyed spending his days mowing and working the 10 acres on his John Deere. He loved spending time with his granddaughters exploring the property. He enjoyed riding his bike; reading the newspaper with a good cup of coffee; listening to music (especially Roger Miller); watching Memphis Tigers basketball; eating popcorn and Reese's; petting and feeding any animal that wandered up to his home; and watching the deer and sunset with his favorite beverage. Poppy was known for his corny and light-hearted jokes that always put a smile on everyone's face.

Don's visitation will be Thursday, April 25, 2024 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm and again on Friday, April 26, from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm. Services will begin at 2:00 pm with a commitment service following.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Page Robbins Adult Day Center, the Alzheimer's Association, or any local animal shelter.

Poppy touched many people's hearts with his kindness and humor. His memory will live on through his family who love him deeply. He will be greatly missed.
