Marilyn Notowich Obituary

Marilyn K. Notowich, age 88 of Memphis, Tennessee, died peacefully with her family by her side on January 31, 2024.

She was born in 1932 in St. Louis, Missouri and moved to Memphis after college. She is preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Herbert L. Notowich, and by her parents, Deena and Harry Kolker, as well as her brothers, Elliot and Barney Kolker.

Marilyn graduated from University City High School in St. Louis and attended the University of Missouri. She enjoyed playing tennis, basketball, and volleyball.

Marilyn loved her family, traveling, making people smile, was an avid reader, and an enthusiastic University of Memphis and Memphis Grizzlies basketball fan. She was a champion of all of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild. Marilyn had a distinctive way of connecting with people and making them feel welcome, often hosting family and friends for celebratory occasions. She was actively involved in her community and, in particular, with her cherished Beth Sholom Synagogue. One of Marilyn's many volunteer efforts included delivering meals with the Memphis Inter-Faith Association (MIFA).

Marilyn is survived by her children, Stacy Canales (Art), Scott Notowich (Jill), and Lee Notowich (Stephanie). She also leaves her grandchildren, Aaron and Brittney, Sam, Joey and Rachel, Samantha and Avi, Deena, Maddie, Davis, and Margot, and her great-grandchild, Hannah, as well as her dear brother-in-law, Alvin Notowich.

The service and burial took place on Friday, February 2, 2024 at Beth Sholom Memorial Gardens where Marilyn was laid to rest alongside her husband, parents, and brother.

Donations in Marilyn's memory may be made to Beth Sholom Synagogue (bsholom.org).

Mom was one of a kind. There is no replacement for her. Her loss leaves a big hole in our family just like Dad (Herb) did. We continue to mourn her loss but remain grateful for having her so long as part of our lives. She is missed every day but her memory will live on forever.
