Matthew Murphy Obituary

Matthew Campbell Murphy died unexpectedly Sunday, September 10, 2023, at age 32, in Nashville, Tennessee. He was born on July 12, 1991, in Memphis, Tennessee. He entered into a relationship with Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at a very young age.

Matthew attended Presbyterian Day School, Memphis University School, and the University of Mississippi, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Banking and Finance. While at Ole Miss, he was an active member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He was a member of the Tennessee Mortgage Bankers Association and the National Mortgage Bankers of America. He was instrumental in the formation of The Commonwealth Group, where he was Vice-President of Quality Control.

Matthew loved the outdoors, especially hunting with his father, snow skiing in Colorado, and spending time with Nala, his faithful Golden Retriever. He was an accomplished golfer, and he also enjoyed music very much. He was quite an avid reader. One of his favorite authors was C. S. Lewis, whom he delighted in quoting. Matthew had many friends and will be lovingly remembered by all who knew him for his contagious smile, his brilliant mind, and his tender heart.

The family requests that any memorials be sent to:
The Matthew C. Murphy Scholarship Fund
The Matthew C. Murphy Fund for Excellence in the School of Business Administration
(These were personally endowed by Matthew at the University of Mississippi.)
The Boys and Girls Clubs of America
Christ Covenant Reformed Church of Memphis, Tennessee

Matthew is survived by his parents, Dr. Garnett and Leslie Murphy; his brother, Dr. Drew Murphy (Melia); his sister, Susannah Malek; his aunt, Peggy Biggs; a niece, Olivia Malek; three nephews, Andrew Murphy, Dr. Will Murphy, and Ben Malek; and his beloved fiancée, Allie Leleaux. He was predeceased by his two grandmothers, Mrs. Mosy Murphy and Mrs. Ann Shoaf.

"And this is the testimony, God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son."

My dear Leslie and Garnett, why, oh why are we losing our young men? It is not ours to understand, but the Lord decided that it was their time. I know, this does not make me feel any better either; but, I try to trick my mind into absorbing that thought. Our human pain is not getting better, but we can pretend it does. If we pretend long enough, maybe, just maybe the pain will lessen a small bit. At least Wylie will have his buddy with him in Heaven, and they are certainly better off than we are. I wanted to tell you that I cannot make it to the gathering at 6:30 pm as I am house sitting/dog sitting for some dear friends in Oxford. If it was a little earlier in the day, I could come for a bit. My love, compassion, understanding, and pain are right with you. We will understand God's plan when we are up there with Him and our babies--it just may not happen while we are in our earthly bodies.

Blessings and comfort to you both.

Love,

Katheryn Coleman
