Michael Terry Obituary

On October 30, 2021, the world lost a brilliant and magnetic man. Michael Durham Terry was born to Luther Leonidas Terry and Janet Reynolds Terry in Maryland. Michael attended Deerfield Academy, Wesleyan University in Connecticut, and received a graduate degree from Wharton School of Business. He began his career in finance which took him from New York City to San Francisco where he met and married his wife Joan. With two kids in tow, they moved to Memphis for Michael to steward the Troxel Company, a family-owned manufacturing operation. He and Joan settled on Ocean View Farm, a humorous nod to Joan's California roots.

Michael made an impression on everyone he met. He lit up the room at a party, telling stories informed by his deep and broad knowledge and was never at a loss for witty jokes. He was a world traveler, a birdwatcher, a loving father, and a true renaissance man. He was an avid reader who wrote poetry and novels. He was a painter and a lover of music and art, as well as a gifted athlete and a talented singer. He was active in charitable organizations and enjoyed helping others. He was a two time cancer survivor who persevered through adversity to see his children married and grandchildren laugh at his wacky antics.

He leaves behind his wife Joan, two children, Agnes (Andrew) Quiggle, Luther (Meghan) Terry, and three grandsons, Murphy, Leonidas, and Luther. He also leaves behind a plethora of friends as well as numerous pigeons and chickens. He will be incredibly missed.

I am deeply saddened to discover the passing of my mentor and friend, Michael Terry. Michael and I met when we were partnered as Michael (mentor) and I (protégé) participated in the Nexus Leaders´ class of 2011. I was impressed by his humor, intelligence, and modesty from our first encounter. When I met his beautiful wife, Joan, it occurred to me; this man must have it all figured out if he could pull such a fine woman as Joan. From that point on, I was listening to every word he said. I will miss his jokes and him being one of the few persons who allowed and expected me to be my true self. He was open about his past, mistakes, and accomplishments and often told me that he learned as much from me as I learned from him. He was a gentleman. He was a friend. He was an inspiration. I wish we had more time, and I miss him dearly.

I had the privilege - and pure enjoyment - of knowing Michael for the past 20 years, first through his, Joan's and his entire family's support for the Luther L. Terry Award at the American Cancer Society, but then as a friend and colleague in the ensuing years. I always learned something, had a nice laugh, and came away with more admiration for Michael every time we spoke. I will miss him, and the public health community will miss him, but his love for his family is eternal, as are the lives he touched, and saved, through his dedication to improving public health.

I'm sorry to hear of Michael's passing. My sincere condolences to the family. As a Luther Terry Awardee I know how hard Michael worked to keep the legacy of his father's tenure as U.S. Surgeon General alive and appropriately recognized. More importantly Michael was a tireless advocate for cancer control and a role model for those of us privileged to have interacted with him. May he rest in peace and his family be comforted by the fact that he lived a good life helping others along the way.

To Joan and family, it is with an extremely heavy heart that I just learned of Michaels passing. I'm still in shock. He and I just traded e-mails a few days ago and Rosa Lee and I have been saying for some time that we needed to take another trip out to Germantown to see you guys. As you probably know I only met Michael for the first time 8 years ago but for whatever reason we seemed to hit it off immediately. Of course we had some long talks about his dad and his days as the SG during the Kennedy administration -- that was certainly the glue to our 8 year friendship, but it was also much much more than that. My biggest regret is not having met him sooner. He was a joy to be around, smart, funny and had a way of drawing people to him. Please accept our sincere condolences, Michael will most certainly be missed by all who knew him.
