Allen Sutton Obituary

GLOUCESTER - Allen Lee Sutton, owner of Sutton's Restaurant in Gloucester, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007, after losing his courageous struggle with mesothelioma and related illnesses. Born Oct. 2, 1940, in Baltimore, Md., he was the younger of two sons born to the late Mary Elizabeth Proctor and Marion Oscar Sutton. He was also preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Nannie Hall and Allie Proctor; and his paternal grandparents, Etta Bristow and Lemuel Sutton, all of Gloucester. Educated in Virginia, Allen graduated from Gloucester High School in 1959. He had a 40-year career at Newport News Shipbuilding (now Northrop Grumman) in both union-eligible and salaried positions. A lifelong Methodist, he belonged to Singleton United Methodist Church, Schley. Additionally, he had been active in both the Knights of Pythias and the Gloucester Moose Lodge #886, serving on the board and as an officer. His survivors included his devoted wife, Connee Young Sutton; their older daughter, Melissa and her husband, Arnold Smith, of Hampton; their younger daughter, Beth and her husband, Stuart Bunting, of Wicomco; two precious granddaughters, Caroline and Claire Bunting; and his older brother, Marion Proctor Sutton of Hudgins. Others who lovingly remember Allen include his numerous cousins and their families; his many friends; and his former colleagues. Each will cherish his life, his many thoughtful kindnesses, and the memories he leaves them. A celebration of Allen's life will begin with a visitation from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at Andrews Funeral Home, Gloucester. Funeral services, conducted by Les Goode, Pastor of Singleton United Methodist Church, and Richard Croxton, Pastor of Providence Baptist Church, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21, at Singleton United Methodist Church with interment to follow at Ware Episcopal Church Cemetery, Gloucester. The family has requested that expressions of sympathy be in the form of memorial contributions to either Gloucester Fire Department and Rescue, P.O. Box 1417, Gloucester, VA 23061; or to Singleton United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 27, Schley, VA 23154. Andrews Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dear Beth and family,
I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your father. I did not know him, but I have heard many wonderful things about him (and he had to be pretty fantastic to raise a great person like you). I know that words cannot express or ease the pain you feel during this time of loss. May your strength in God comfort you and the knowledge that you will see him again. If there is anything I can do for your or your family, please call me. Your friend,

Maria Johnson
