Brooks Mick Obituary

Yorktown, Va. - Dr. Brooks Allen ("Al") Mick, a Vietnam War veteran and long-time resident of Yorktown, VA, passed away on January 25, 2022 surrounded by family. Al spent his life serving, healing, and giving to others. Whether you called him "Dad" or "Papaw" or "Al" or "Dr. Mick" or "Colonel Mick," to know him was to love him. To his family, friends, patients, and Army colleagues, Al characterized the phrase salt of the earth.

Al was born on June 28, 1941 to Charles and Mildred in Ohio. He attended the Ohio State University College of Medicine and completed residencies at Case Western Reserve University/University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and St. Luke's University Hospital in Bethlehem, PA. As a retired U.S. Army Colonel, Al served on active duty with the Army during the Vietnam War, worked as an Army Reserve physician for over 20 years, and concluded his career in the role of Hospital Commander.

Al spent over 50 years practicing medicine. He served as an Internist at Blanchard Valley Hospital in Findlay, OH and was one of the only doctors making house calls at the time. Al went on to work at Mary Immaculate and Sentara Careplex Hospitals in Newport News, VA. Al was also on staff at Langley Air Force Base Hospital in Hampton, VA. Through his work as a doctor, Al positively impacted numerous patients, not just through his medical expertise, but also with his distinctive love for caring for others and helping them heal.

Al loved sailing and boating and belonged to the local Power Squadron. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved to camp and hike, often retreating to the mountains outfitted with his tent and every single piece of survival gear one could need. He was an avid photographer, a self-taught guitar player, and while often quiet and reserved, always taught us to never take life too seriously with his wonderful and quirky sense of humor.

Al is survived by his wife Nancy and his children, Erin, Laurie, Jimmy, Wendy, Bobby, and Jeff and adored his 11 grandchildren. His family will organize a service to celebrate his life this spring. Arrangements by Amory Funeral Home, Grafton, Va.

I worked with/for Colonel/Dr Mick when he was the commanding officer of the 18th Field Hospital USAR in the later part of the 1990s and some thru 2004. He had to be the one commander who led by example and never criticized anyone in public, and when he had to correct someone, he did it graciously and without rancor. I learned how to be a leader from him. He was the best OIC that I ever experienced. I am sure he will be missed. I still miss him now, as well. I wish I could have blown "Taps" on my trumpet for him.

I only knew him from Twitter. He taught me about `Suzy chapstick“ , and many other interesting bits of information. He was brilliant, kind, charming and quite a teacher. My goodness, you who really knew him must feel so lost. My prayers for comfort to you. God, he loved you so.

To Nancy, Erin, Laurie, Jimmy, Wendy, Bobby, and Jeff and the rest of the family. I just learned of the passing of Dr. Brooks Mick. I called him Brooks. He and I were longtime colleagues in the practice of medicine at Hampton General and Mary Immaculate Hospitals. Brooks was one of the best. He not only displayed excellence in the practice of medicine but he also displayed genuine concern for his patients. He had an excellent bedside manner. I am sure all of you are receiving the important support that family and friends can provide at a time like this. However, inner rationalization and an acceptance of the ultimate fate of all human beings are of little comfort after the passing of such a good man. Brooks expects you to mourn, but he would not expect you to suffer. Rejoice in his memory.

Mrs Nancy & family, so sorry to hear of Dr Mick's home going. Dr Mick will truly be missed! I worked with him at Sentara (Denbigh & Careplex) & he was a wealth of knowledge. I just saw him in October & we talked awhile. My heart is so heavy.... Praying for strength and comfort during this time....

To Dr Mick 's Family: Dr. Mick was my bestest doctor in the world. When he retired, I was happy for you all but so sad for us. He always listened to "anything " I had on my mind when it came to my medical concerns. He also was happy to show some family pictures, especially those of his grandson. Thank you for sharing him with us and sending lots of prayers.

I was saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Mick. I had the pleasure of working with him at Sentara Health Plan. I learned a great deal from him and he was a joy to be around. He guest-lectured at our summer PA conference at Virginia Beach and was well-received by my fellow PA's. I was happy to run into him at Kohl's about 6-8 months ago. Please accept my sincere condolences. I will never forget him
