Where do we begin to tell you how much our father was adored? He will always be our hero. Yes, he was renowned for his countless career achievements, many people knew him simply as 'Coach Nuttycombe', but we knew him as Dad. He always put others first, leading by example with his kind words. He cared deeply for his family, students, athletes, and anyone who came into his life. He was a true mentor who was passionate about doing the best job possible. He gave so much of himself and touched so many lives with his pearls of wisdom. If he were here, he would not tell you about his accomplishments, but he would humbly tell you about the people that touched his life. Funny and compassionate, with a wicked sense of humor, he was a true gentleman. Fascinated with history and maps, he was often referred to as our walking roadmap. He could tell you the exact mileage from most anyplace when you were getting ready to take a trip and he could give you the latitude and longitude of any major city in the world.

In high school, at Thomas Jefferson, he was the 'Outstanding Athlete' in his senior class while competing in football and track, earning a state championship in the broad jump. Upon graduation, he attended VMI on a football scholarship before transferring to Randolph Macon College where he lettered in three sports (football, track, and basketball). He was the 1955 football team captain and three-time track team captain. Throughout his college career, he earned 13 state champion titles in various events.

Dad began his teaching and coaching career in 1956 at Newport News High School. During his 14-year tenure, he was able to maintain a high level of excellence as established by his mentor, Coach Julie Conn. As head track coach, his teams won a combined 14 state championships. In 1961, Dad took over as head football coach. His football career for the Typhoons was highlighted by his undefeated team in 1962 (9-0-1). He moved to Menchville High School in 1970, where he stayed until retirement in 1990. At Menchville he started the football and track programs from scratch. As a head football coach, his teams had a record of 150-108-18. He had five athletes that went on to play in the NFL. As head track coach, his teams produced a record of 125-3-2 in dual meet competition and he was involved in 21 state track team championships. He personally coached state champions in every event indoor and outdoor, but one. Dad had the good fortune of coaching each of his four sons when they attended Menchville. Coaching and teaching were Dad's gifts. He created a special bond with his athletes and students that continued for all the years of his life.

During his career that touched five decades, he received numerous local and state honors, including the 1990 Virginia HS Coaches Distinguished Service Award. On the national level he was awarded the inaugural 'United States National High School Track Coach of the Year Award' in 1975. In 2005 he became one of only four high school coaches to be inducted into the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame. In 2014 his son Ed (University of Wisconsin) followed his father into the Hall of Fame and they remain the only father-son combination. He is also a member of the Virginia High School League Hall of Fame (1992), Menchville High School Hall of Fame (2005), Newport News Public School Track and Field Hall of Fame (1991). In 2014 he became a member of the Lower Virginia Peninsula Hall of Fame and a member of his Randolph Macon College Athletic Hall of Fame (2015). Without fail when receiving career accolades, he would always acknowledge our mother for her lifetime of support.

Dad would often say: "Practice with persistence to perform to your potential."

"Do what you're supposed to do when you're supposed to do it."

"It does not matter about the wins or losses, what matters is how you impact the lives you touch and to see their success years later."

You are one in a billion Dad. We are blessed to have had you as our father. You are truly loved and will be deeply missed.

And to all his students and athletes he would say...Mission Accomplished!

There will be a Charles Nuttycombe Memorial Scholarship Fund established at Menchville High School. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Online condolences may be made at: www.weymouthfuneralhome.com. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.

Coach Nuttycombe began his track coaching career at NNHS my senior year and was not only a good coach, but a good man. I believe of all his state champions, our mile relay team in 1957 would have been his first. It was a great day for us. L to R: Coach Nuttycombe, Harvey Weinstein, Kim Whiteside, Raoul Weinstein, Richard Coltrane, Coach Conn. RIP Charlie Nuttycombe.

Coach Nuttycombe was one of the most interesting people I have ever talked to. His wisdom, humility, and humor was amazing. Coach was a faithful member of our St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, which allowed me to talk to him often. He was one of the reasons I enjoyed going to church. He was such a proud father of his children, and such a wonderful father figure for many high school athletes who were blessed to have him in their lives.
He professed his love for Betsy in open discussions - - and thanked her for the great support she gave him over the years. A long love affair and marriage that is a great model for us all. Rest in peace, Coach.

I was just a small part of the Track & Field Dynasty at NNHS. It is an honor to have been part of the team led by Coaches Nuttycombe and Conn. They were such great leaders. I do wonder how two super coaches managed to work so well together, since they were individually so great. Thanks for the memories. I lost touch after high school, but never lost the impact or the memories. He left quite the legacy via the ones he touched. My sincere condolences to the family.

My deepest condolences to the Nuttycombe family. I am so grateful to have had Coach Nuttycombe as a Track and Football coach. His gift for relating to individual athletes and leading teams inspired hard work, peak performance and character building perseverance. He was the motivator on the backstretch with a stopwatch, the splits on the back of an envelope, and just the right words of encouragement. We loved him because he showed how much he loved and wanted the best for us. He did so much for so many, and for so long.

God bless him and his wonderful family. - Ed Daniel Menchville ‘78

Coach was a great man, and teacher. I have spoken with Coach several times in the last five years, and I was always amazed that his memory was so good. He had a way of
making practice seem like fun, even when we were working
hard. In our phone conversations the last several years, I always told Coach that I loved him and he would always reply "I love you too OJ."

When I got to Menchville in 1983, I was eager to meet this Coach Nuttycombe my brother and his friends (MHS Class of 1972) use to talk about. They told me about the time Coach took them to the National Track Meet in Tennessee and my brother(Russell Mitchell) at the time was the best shot put/disc thrower in the state of Va. He got all the way there and "choked up". When they got back Coach had named an award after him "The Choke Mitchell Award". Lol. Til last year when I spoke to Coach at a football game he would always say "Your brother was an outstanding young man and I remember his report he did in my Government class." I had Coach for Geography at Menchville. He was excited to meet me after he found out I was Russell's little sister and I was excited to meet him. Coach, THANKS for all you taught us and never forgetting us. Rest on COACH, for your work here is done.

Coach Nuttycombe was an outstanding coach and educator, but more than that he was a great human being. I first met him at a VHSL coaching clinic in the 1960’s. After changing careers and coming to Newport News we reconnected and he became a friend and a valuable source of information and support during my years with the NNPD and during my tenure as president of the Peninsula Sports Club. He was a true gentleman and an inspiration to so many young people. He will certainly be missed.

I had the pleasure of meeting Coach Nuttycombe when I was a senior at Menchville Highschool in 1995. Coach was long retired, but you could count on seeing him at every major track meet in Tidewater.

He was a legend and when coach spoke, you listened. I was privileged to have coach give me advice and take an interest in my running career. He spoke to me about running with efficiency and practicing with the same focus and fluidity that I would race. I only spoke to coach a few times but his words and encouragement gave me confidence. I can still remember how I felt when he said he believed in me. I felt honored that the GREAT Coach Nuttycombe saw something in me that I didnt see in myself.

Thats the mark of a true leader. Im sure he made a lot of people on this earth feel special.

Thanks Coach for believing in me and blessing me with your smile, advice and confidence.

May peace be with the Nuttycombe family. RIP Coach.

With Gratitude,

My heart was saddened to hear of Coach Nuttycombe's passing. My memories of history class, and trying to steer him on the conversation of football instead of history, makes me smile. He knew what I was doing and said, "Cookie, I know you aren't interested but I will address it anyway". As the years flew, I saw him numerous times at lunch, or Sam's but especially at our class reunions as a guest. He never tired of repeating the story of my brother's approaching him to run track and how he achieved what the Coach didn't expect. I am so grateful I got to hear him speak and talk to him at our 55th reunion last year and see Betsy. What a great loss to all.

When I was a student at Hampton High, I supported his opposition; but the Crabbers knew what a challenge any game coached by Coach Nuttycombe would be.
In 1972 I called Coach a colleague as I assumed a teaching position at Menchville (under the name "Anderson") and admired his dedication and integrity. I even taught his son Chuck, who went on to play for my alma mater, VT. My memories are of a man who was a role model for not only his own children, but for all of those "children" whose lives he touched. May God comfort you, his family.

Coach Nuttycombe was a great mentor to me. He would “coach me up” on the back porch of St. Stephen’s Church every Sunday Morning until we moved away.

He was a quiet man of determination, grit, and intelligence. I respected and admired him beyond words. Just to note Charlie Nuttycombe was a great coach. In my opinion the best ever track and field coach at any level of competition in the Commonwealth.

Condolences to Mrs. Coach and his entire family.

Coach you ran the race. Well done good a faithful servant.

MHS class if 86- He was a wonderful teacher, I had him for Drivers Ed and US History. He was always eager to talk about a map and told stories all the time about his family, where he was from, and personal experiences that kept kids interested, even at the dreaded 7am class in that cold trailer room! He was one of the good ones. May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.
