Dear Vernon, Shirley and all Chris's Loved ones,

My sister saw the notice and sent it on to me. I am heart broken to hear this news. Chris and I had lost touch for a number of years after I left Newport News in pursuit of my flying career. We caught up again in April this year and he seemed hopeful that his illness was behind him. We spoke of many of the milestones we both had and it was much like we had not spoken in weeks not years. Chris was helpful in my early flying and was there the day I soloed in a Cessna 152. So many stories listened to and told in that old hangar by the gate.

Chris really took a great deal of pleasure in the birth and lives of his children and enjoyed aviation and those spoke and lived it.

Anyone who knew Chris was better for the experience.

I have alway believed God doesn't take you a moment before your time yet it's hard for those who loved him to agree with His choice.
I watched Chris grow into a terrific man through the proud and loving eyes of his parents. I feel I've lost a dear, dear friend.
I can't imagine the depth of your sorrow but know that I love you all and always will. The Cartwrights are very special to me and to our community.

Dearest Shirley, Vernon and Walter, Mannie and I are overwhelmed with grief to learn that our special friend has died. Chris was the most beautiful young man - smart, loving, genuine. We will miss him but know we will see each other again in heaven. We hope your heavy hearts lighten each day that passes. God is always good. With love and great sympathy, "Smokey" and Fredi Branch

Mr. and Mrs. Cartwright,

I am so sorry to hear about Chris. He and I and Mike Conway were the best of friends for so many years. I have tried to find Chris on the internet several times, actually just last month. I will always regret that I was too late. My thoughts are with you.
