David MASON Obituary

HAMPTON - David "Sonny" Mason, 77, died Thursday, March 17, 2011.
A native and lifelong resident of Fox Hill, Sonny worked 43 years as an electrician at the Newport News Shipyard, retiring in 1995. He was a member of Fox Hill Central United Methodist Church and the Men's Bible Class.
With a love for all things outdoors, Sonny enjoyed hunting, fishing and always had bird dogs. He was a founding member of the Peninsula Bird Hunters Club, serving as their first president and continued to be instrumental and active as they became part of the National Bird Hunters Association. Sonny was a member of the Fox Hill Hunt Club and an honorary member of the Fox Hill Fire Company. A bird dog trainer, many of his dogs have been cited in publications and in field trial competitions.
Preceded in death by his parents, Marguerite and John Mason; his brother, Elvin Mason; and his sister, Lucille Elfer; Sonny is survived by his wife, Hattie Mason with whom he lived "together separately"; daughters, Rhonda Quinn and husband, Deryl, Robin Mason and Brenda Burch; grandchildren, Jason, Brandi, Brandon, Cole, Haley, and Cameron; his great-grandson, Brayden; brother, John Mason; and nieces and nephews, Randy, Ellen Sue and Libby.
Sonny was very much loved and will be greatly missed. Thanks to the many friends, church members, hunting and fishing buddies, and the breakfast bunch. The amount of support, the company and compassion went far beyond what could have been asked. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. A special thank you to the hospice and the lovely caregivers who made him smile in his last few days.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, March 21, 2011, at Fox Hill Central United Methodist Church by the Rev. Wayne Moore with interment to follow in Clark Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home in Downtown Hampton.
Memorials may be made to Fox Hill Central United Methodist Church, 501 Beach Road, Hampton, VA 23664. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Hattie, I can only imagine the celebration in Heaven when Sonny and Frank met up again after all these years. A lot of laughter and memories being shared. My love and sympathy to you and your girls. Think of you sooooo often, remembering our childhood days playing on your Mom's hand hooked rugs. :) Love, Ann-Tilghman (Bowers) Rodgers

Hattie and Girls:

We are so sorry about you loss of Sonny. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. The field trial fraternity has lost not just a dear friend, we have lost a leader, a mentor to many newcomers and youngsters just starting out in the sport and a true southern gentleman. George and Sandy spoke of Sonny's warm smile which we can all remember. I'll bet that smile is even wider and warmer now that he is at peace.

May god bless you all
