Gail Grisetti Obituary

Celebration of Life of Gail Carol Grisetti

Gail C. Grisetti, PT, EdD passed away peacefully at her home in Hampton, Virginia, on March 14, 2023. Born in Missouri in 1946, Gail moved with her parents August "Gus" and Rose Grisetti to Gus's childhood home in the Bronx, NY when she was a toddler. She remained there throughout childhood, becoming a New Yorker through and through. She graduated from Riverdale Country Day School in 1964 and went on to earn a BA in Dance from Bard College in 1968. Always fascinated with movement, Gail worked various jobs while taking science classes, and earned a Certificate in Physical Therapy 1977 from Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons. She practiced PT in an acute care hospital in NYC, quickly rising to become department Director. She continued her studies earning a Doctorate in Health Education from Columbia University's Teacher's College in 1989.

Gail left her beloved NYC and moved to Hampton, VA in 1986 to join the faculty teaching Physical Therapy at Old Dominion University and to marry her friend from High School, Abdul Jamaludeen. She taught in the ODU Physical Therapy program for 32 years and made a significant impact on the nationally recognized program, particularly with her expertise and interest in Community and International Health. Countless students passed through her classroom and were enriched in their practices as a result.

In her professional life Dr. Grisetti achieved the rank of Associate Professor and expressed her passion to help others by volunteering with several international organizations bringing her expertise in education to train physical therapists worldwide. She played a key role in developing an undergraduate program in physical therapy at Catholic University in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. She also participated in the development of a curriculum for the education of an interdisciplinary team of rehabilitation professionals in the treatment of children with Autism in Santiago, Dominican Republic. Her scholarly work has been presented at international prosthetic conferences including France, Panama, Guatemala, Ecuador, the Philippines, and India. Dr. Grisetti was also a member of the first volunteer group to arrive in Haiti after the earthquake of 2010 to help assist the amputee population.

Merging her interests in education and international service, Dr. Grisetti developed a collaboration between ODU and the NGO Physicians for Peace to create a study abroad program. ODU PT students traveled with Dr. Grisetti to the Dominican Republic to study health care, culture, and to participate in health service, and Dominican PTs came to ODU to participate in laboratory classes and to interact with American students and faculty. Awards for her accomplishments include the ODU Provost's Award for International Leadership (2005), ODU Community Service Award (2010), Physicians for Peace Medical Diplomat Award (2012), and Honorary Advisor to the School of Rehabilitation, Catholica University, Santo Domingo, The Dominican Republic (2013).

In addition to teaching and traveling, Gail pursued an interest in learning and studying dance, meditation and yoga. She was faithful to practicing mindfulness and movement and encouraged others to do the same.

Gail is survived by her husband, Abdul Hamid Jamaludeen, MD, and his children, as well as long-time friends Bob, Martha, Mary, David and Beth among others, who hold her memory dear. She wishes to thank Alice and the members of the Hidenwood Chair Yoga group for their spirit of sharing and friendship. An interment of ashes will be private. To honor her memory please consider a donation to her most recent international project with Mission Gait in the Solomon Islands. Details can be found here https://www.missiongait.org/donate.

I knew Gail when we were both at Bard. I had the good fortune of reconnecting in the past year through my activities with the alumni association. I was shocked at her sudden demise as I was unaware of any heath issues.

Soooooo sorry and saddened to hear that Dr Grissetti passed. I was blessed to be her research assistant at ODU in the 80s while working for Greg Frazier. She and Dr J Richardson also hired me to work for Commty Hlth Professions and PT with practicum placements for health care admin and commty health. This position allowed me to work closely with Dr Rettie and Mahaifer and the Provost. Dr Grissetti was my Aging Professor in graduate school and a strong advocate for preventing disease and disability among aging persons. I did stop by university a few times during pandemic to visit my former colleagues and hate that I missed Dr. Grissetti. I did get a pic that all the faculty took with Dr Eternach on golf cart. One of Dr Grissetti's former scholars is my DPT now and as we talked about ODU and Dr G he told me that she passed and pulled up her obituary. In addition to superior excellence, she was what the youth call a real one. She would come to my apt in NN to pick up research docs so I wouldn't have to drive them over to Norfolk. She was young and vibrant and very warm. I appreciate all that she has done for my career and professional development in aging populations. And I am healing under the superior and supernatural care of one of her forme PT scholars and researchers. She would be soooo proud to know that he was offered a position at UNC. ODU has a superior and nationally ranked DPT program thanks in large part to Dr Grissetti. I will never forget you. Thanks for being an earth angel who was sincere, ethical and willing to help diversify administrative roles at ODU. My heart breaks that I can't tell you the things I accomplished nationally and internationally because you and Dr Frazier and Eternach and Rettie and Mahaifer believed in me.

Gail- you will be soooo missed in the Physical Therapy community. As one of your early students, you helped me look at the big picture. Then I came back to ODU to teach for three years as the program expanded! You were there to mentor a clinician who struggled to switch to teacher mode! Your travels to the Dominican Republic were legendary! Rest in peace

It is with a heavy heart that I write this. Gail’s first year at ODU was also my first year of PT school. She was not only a professor of mine who taught me sooo much but we also grew to be a friends and wonderful colleagues. She was a true “giver” of herself and knowledge to the entire PT profession. I am such a better person learning from and having Gail in my life! Prayers to her husband and family. We will miss her dearly.

Sending my condolences to Gail's family and friends. She was a beautiful, generous and brave soul who left us too soon and will be missed dearly. I was lucky enough to got to know Gail during my time at Physicians for Peace where she made huge contribution to PFP's work and mission. Gails brilliance and generousity of spirit was quickly matched by her sense of humor. One of my favorite memories of Gail is from a lunch at a restaurant in Suffolk. Gail, Mary, another friend and PFP colleague and I found ourselves laughing so hard and loud that the table next to us started giving us the evil eyes and somehow that just made us laugh even more.... It was summer of 2012. I don't remember what the topic of conversation was but just remember us doubled over in laughter. Here is to having friends we love and care about and with whom we can belly laugh that are loud enough to be heard around the room. Gail brought so much love, laughter and kindness in the world and positively impacted so many lives around the world. Rest in power sweet friend. The world and our lives are better to have come in contact with you.
