George Ackerman Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - George L. Ackerman, 61, who tempted taste buds and pampered palates for 35 years as owner of the Warwick Cheese Shoppe, died unexpectedly Jan. 3, 2014. Born in California, he was the youngest of L.C. "Bud" Ackerman and Barbara Bohlken Ackerman's children. He grew up in California, Wisconsin, Ontario, Canada and Newport News and attended University School of Milwaukee, Hampton Roads Academy and St. John's College. After working as a wine salesman for Broudy-Kantor Co., George, helped by his father, bought the Cheese Shoppe in 1978. The store was a family effort from the start. Over the years, nearly a dozen relatives and in-laws pitched in by making sandwiches, gift baskets and deliveries; washing dishes; keeping the books and accommodating the capricious demands of a small business. But George was the big cheese, heart and soul of the enterprise. He was adept at finding white-collar wines for blue-collar budgets and encouraging customers - many of them friends - to try a new cheese, sausage or sandwich special. He shared his knowledge and expertise with fellow wine aficionados and dinner guests alike. George also dispensed jokes from behind the store's counter, repeating the good ones often. As a taste maker, he helped expand and elevate local food options. The Cheese Shoppe was one of the first businesses in the area to carry gummi bears, single-origin coffees, freshly baked bagels, paté, craft beers and imports for which expats longed. The store's house dressing and trademark sandwiches taste the same in 2014 as they did in 1978, fulfilling expectations perfectly. George took pride in that. He improved the Peninsula in other ways, helping the Warwick Rotary Club build the forerunner of the Virginia Living Museum and tutoring students at Sedgefield Elementary School and Gildersleeve Middle School. George contributed to the original Fort Fun at Huntington Park, a new Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church and Peninsula Catholic High School and was a founding shareholder in Harbor Bank. His store supported Little-League baseball, youth sailing, the Poor Clares and St. Vincent's Backdoor Ministry. He didn't belong to any religious community but was a man of conscience and civic responsibility. Sunday mornings were spent admiring raptors wheeling overhead while picking up roadside trash in Newport News. George could be spotted cycling to and from work on Warwick Boulevard when weather permitted. He was an avid sailor and participant in races in the waters of Hampton Roads. George was a member of the Lafayette Gun Club and its shotgun committee and loved to shoot clays when he wasn't sailing or driving his vintage Nissan 300ZX TT. His musical tastes, which he shared with customers, ranged from opera and symphonies to the accordion stylings of Flaco Jimenez and Bela Fleck's banjo virtuosity. He loved the Rolling Stones even more. He followed politics with fervor and never hesitated to share his opinion or cancel his wife's vote. Survivors include his wife, Marguerite Hargreaves; daughter, son-in-law and grandson Cecelia, Patrick and Nathan Theobald of Nashville; son Greg Ackerman of Richmond; siblings Nancy and Mike Burnaugh of Marietta, Ga., Janet and Bob Lesser of Macon, N.C., John and Lane Ackerman of Novelty, Ohio; and Barbara and Dale Arnold of Bowling Green, Ohio. He loved his nieces and nephews - Becky, Kara, Brian, David, Jack, Colleen, Megan, Gail, Colin, Erin, Evan, Analiese and Ames - and mother-in-law, Frankie Hargreaves. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, at Peninsula Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, at The Mariners' Museum. George's table fellowship was legendary; please bring a dish, a beverage and a story to share to the memorial service. Burial will be private. To honor George's memory, hoist a glass, vote early and often and patronize your favorite small business.

You are still missed! From time to time I still struggle a little with one of your old textbooks: Lamb’s Hydrodynamics. It never lasts ... I am too long out of math classes. But I was so happy to find this book at a library sale and bought it because I saw your name on the inside of the cover. Later I confirmed with you that it had actually been yours! You have always been a man full of surprises.

Dear Family,
I extend my deepest sympathy to you all. I loved buying sandwiches and specialty items for my Mom and Aunt when they were alive and for my daughter while she was hospitalized after the birth of her baby. It was a treat to share his food selections with my family. I admired and loved George's Mom and Dad and the entire family very much.
With respect,love,and blessings,

I will thoroughly miss George, and all of us at Health Trail extend our sympathy. As a fellow small business owner, George was always willing to give me advice and share his insights on how a citizen could better serve the community. He was always generous with his time, cheerful with customers, and an expert with his craft. More importantly was his love for his family which was plainly evident in our last conversation right before Christmas.

My visits to Newport News frequently included a wine discussion and purchase from George. A delightful and extremely knowledgeable wine lover, he never failed to share knowledge and assistance as we worked to enjoy fine wines.

Please accept our deepest sympathy in your loss.

This is such a beautiful obituary and loving tribute to George. Ed and I would run into George occasionally at 99 Main. It was one such encounter that led. George to call Ed and tell him about a pearl white classic 300ZX TT. That was over 10 years ago and the car is still in our garage. Years ago, our granddaughter and I stopped by The Cheese Shoppe. She told George that his store smelled awful. He looked her scare in the eye and said he thought she smelled awful. He said she smelled like Barbie dolls and pink cotton candy. He then gave her a sample of cheese and she was hooked. The last time I saw George, he was telling me all about the joys of becoming a grandfather.
I have been a regular customer of The Cheese Shoppe since it opened. I spend most of my time in FL. I had told George that one of the things I miss the most when I'm away from Newport News, is The Cheese Shoppe. George leaves a void no one can fill.
You have lost a husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend. The community has lost a good friend, contributor and a wonderful businessman. We hope that you all can find comfort from the memories of all the wonderful, happy times you shared with George. He was a very unique man who left too soon.

Saddened to hear of George's sudden death. He was one of those personalities who should live forever. I first met George 35 years ago when he became owner of the Cheese Shoppe. He had a great zest for life, his family, his business, his friends and his projects.Over the years, we shared many a fine wine, quality cheese and a great meal.He always made the experience more interesting and entertaining. George was one of a kind and will be greatly missed. My deepest sympathy to the family.

George's passing is a loss that will be felt by many. I lived in Germany for 7 years and had gotten into the habit of reading wine labels. That's how I got to meet George. Obviously that identified me as someone that was, at least, trying to know wine. He was able to get me one of my favorites: Wormser Liebfrauen Morgen, which I have not seen since. I will, as many others, miss George and remember him as someone who always had time to get to know his customers and as someone who cared deeply for his craft.

I have enjoyed visiting the Cheese Shoppe for a long time. George always had a story or a joke to tell. He showed me new cheeses, and so often he let me try a cheese before I bought it. One time my young sons were with me, they were thrilled to be allowed to taste a cheese, in fact they were a little over enthusiastic. George's words became part of the family history - "It's a fine line between cute and obnoxious... and you're getting close."
Thanks to George for all the cheese and sandwiches over the years, and for the jokes. Our deepest sympathies to his family.

I used to love it when Mrs. Dr. Webb would ask me to pick up the physics department order for the weekly meeting. Of course, my husband Rick and I have been customers. Mr. Ackerman was always available for us to to pick his brain about wine and cheese, stocking and basket stuffers, etc. Our hearts go out to all his friends and family who will surely miss him more than even we do.

Susan, Johnny and I are so very sorry for your loss, Marguerite and family.
I first met George in 1976 when he was with Broudy-Kantor and I was a manager at the original Kingsmill restaurant. He definitely was my very first wine mentor. I always appreciated his knowledge and passion as well as his humor.
All three of us have such fond memories of our hundreds of trips to the Cheese Shoppe for all of those perfect sandwiches, special wines, and lively visits with George.

Such sad news - I assume George has been looking forward to retire at some point and don't leave so suddenly. He has certainly shaped the taste in the area at a time, when the local supermarkets had been not up-to-date to cater to people like me, getting re-planted from Germany in 1985. I could always find that special something for dinner parties or Jefferson Lab Hall B parties in his store (my duty as the hall leaders' wife). His sandwiches and 'homemade' dressing had been out off this world. He kept my European roots alive. Thank you! My sympathy goes out to the family.

Truly saddened to learn of George's passing. My deepest sympathies to the family. As a former resident and fellow wine fan, I had the pleasure of being in George's company over the years - he taught and intoduced many to the world of fine cheeses and flavor.. Always witty with a satirical lyric delivered with a smile. He warmed the room and had a big heart ! RIP my friend

What a loss for the peninsula! We have been customers for years. His sandwiches are wonderful! Whenever a friend (who was previously local) visits, we have to make sure we all have a Ham and Swiss. George would always offer me delicious cheese samples.....and many times I would buy a wedge:) He would also put together his gorgeous gift baskets that I would use in my jobs. I will always remember his smiling face behind his apron. All of you will be in our thoughts and prayers during this time.

George not only introduced me to paté, with a free sample that immediately sold me on the delicacy, he taught me how to pronounce it. One of my few regrets in moving to Gloucester some years ago has been that it put me too far from the Warwick Cheese Shoppe to visit it regularly, not only for the paté, fine cheeses and wine and the extraordinarily savory sandwiches, but to enjoy George's friendly welcomes and irrepressible wit.

Marguerite's marvelous obituary brings back many of these fond memories and more. News of George's death came with sadness, and now, with reflection, come the happy reminiscences. My warmest sympathies to Marguerite and the family.

I am still at a loss for words for the great void that has been left with George's passing. He was always full of wit and wisdom regarding every day events, and always so helpful in choosing and pairing wines and cheeses. I met Marguerite on a couple of occasions, and I send her my deepest sympathies. George truly loved his family and always glowed when talking about them.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Ackerman Family and the Staff of the Cheese Shoppe over the passing of George. Ever since the Cheese Shoppe was located in the Warwick Shopping Center until the present, we have made our faithful Saturday pilgrimage to the Cheese Shoppe for a delicious sandwich, sometimes twice a week. We will miss George's smiling face and dry wit that always was a presence. We have truly lost a good friend.

Not to be able to see George behind the counter, dispensing samples of his cheese and opinions on everything is leaving a great sadness in my life. My great grand-son, Noah, who has known "George, the cheese man" all his life, told me that everything will be alright because George has gone to be with the Angels. My deepest sympathy to all your family.

To all of George's family,

I am so sad to hear of his passing. George graduated ahead of me at HRA and we enjoyed cars and a love of sailing early on. He loved his turbo Corvair ! We shared the Hilton experience and watched it go from neglected to the best place to be. He always shared his knowledge and time with me, from my Turkey, Surrey Ham and Swiss sandwich to the discovery of my favorite Riesling.

George was a valuable asset to the community and those who knew him well, he will be missed.

George was a great guy. Many a meal at our house was embellished by his wisdom about wine, and every visit to the shop was a pleasure. As a long time Cheese Shoppe customer, I would go in a couple times a month across the last 15 years, always looking for George, always looking for advice on wine, cheese, and eager for whatever commentary or jokes he would impart.

In October, I went in to find some pumpkin beer. Couldn't find any, so asked George where it was.

George: "I don't carry pumpkin beer."
Me: "Why not? It's autumn."
George: "Because I don't like it. And it's too expensive. It SHOULD be much cheaper because of the ingredients, but it's not. It's just not good. So I don't carry it."
Me: "Hmmm. Ok."

I went to Total Wines and got some pumpkin beer. After a bit, decided I didn't like it.

I will miss George terribly. I counted on and enjoyed him enormously.
