GLADYS SHARPE WRIGHT

Gladys Sharpe Wright, 97, went to be with her Heavenly Father on Thursday, July 29, 2021. Gladys was born into a Christian family in Snow Camp, NC. While growing up, she played forward-center on her High School basketball team and was labeled the Sylvan Ace by the local media. After graduating from Business College in 1942, she worked as an office manager in Graham, NC. In 1948, she married, started her family and moved to Virginia with her husband where they became members of Deer Park Baptist Church. Once in Virginia, she worked as a bookkeeper for the family business, Wright Electric. Gladys loved to paint ceramics and was an avid crafter, known for creating amazing quilts, a wide array of Christmas ornaments, and just about anything else made from fabric. She volunteered at Riverside Hospital for over 30 years with the sewing group, creating a supply of stuffed animals to comfort admitted children. Gladys also had a passion for gardening, both vegetables and flowers. She was a dedicated mother who loved her family, enjoyed baking and cooking for all our family events. Hardworking, strong-willed, determined, with a positive outlook, are characteristics of Gladys that will live on in her children and grandchildren.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar Dwight Sharpe and Sarah Frances Neese Sharpe; former husband, Harold Wright; her eldest daughter, Judith Maxie; her brother, Loften, and her sisters, Mable, Christine and Nina. She is survived by her youngest brother, Glenn; her son, Byron Wright (Donna); her daughters, Pamela Dickerson (George), and Patricia Shohan (Joe); her son-in-law, Leroy; her grandchildren, Stephen, Christi, Selenia, Jared, Cheris, Sydney and Lauren; 15 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, August 12, 2021 at Peninsula Memorial Park by Pastor Chip Dean of Liberty Live Church. Many thanks to the remarkable and loving care that Valerie Bell, Scarlett Barden, Burnetta Lee-Mason gave over the last few years, it made all the difference.
