Henry Schutz Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG - Henry A. Schutz Jr. passed away May 21, 2006. He was 82 years old. Born in New York City on March 5, 1924, he was a longtime Virginia resident. After graduating from high school in Christiansburg, Va., he enrolled at the College of William and Mary. His education was interrupted by World War II in which he saw combat in the Pacific Theater as a gunnery officer in the U.S. Navy. Upon conclusion of the war, he married his college sweetheart, Elizabeth Winston Aurell. He graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1947. He was accepted as a Special Agent in the Federal Bureau of Investigation in August 1947 and served for almost 28 years in various capacities, including Inspector in Charge, Criminal Section at FBI Headquarters. He retired in 1974 as a Special Agent in Charge, New York Division. He was then employed for several years as a Corporate Director, Security, by the Sperry Corporation, headquartered in NYC. During the early '80s he took up residence in Gloucester, Va., where, in retirement, he was active in community affairs for many years serving as President of the Board of Trustees for the Gloucester Library and eventually the Gloucester Library Endowment Foundation. A former member of the Gloucester Lions Club and the National Association of Chiefs of Police, he was active in the formation of a 3000-member WW II naval association, serving a term as its President in 1996. His youngest son, Robert Schutz, preceded him in death. His is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Betty. He is also survived by a son, Henry Schutz III of Springfield, Va.; a daughter, Carolyn and her husband, Robert Bowman, of Amherst, N.H.; a son, Kenneth and his wife, Diane, of Fairfax, Va.; a son, James and his wife, Leslie, in Israel; and a daughter, Kathryn and her husband, Captain Edward Amrhein USN (ret), of Harrisonburg, Va. He is survived by granddaughters, Andrea Rogers, Kerry Ann Cross and Heather Schutz, and by grandsons, Derek Bowman, Michael Schutz and David Schutz, as well as five great-grandchildren. Also, a brother, Edgar K. Schutz of Sewickley, Pa. Memorial services, conducted by the Rev. Dr. E. Allen Coffey, will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, May 27, at Abingdon Episcopal Church. Inurnment will follow in the church cemetery. Contributions to honor his memory may be made to Gloucester Library Endowment Foundation, P.O. Box 776, Gloucester, VA 23061. I worked for Henry as a new FBI agent in the New York Division in the early 1970's.
My father and he were ship mates during WWll in the South Pacific.
