Hershel SHACKELFORD Obituary

HAYES - Hershel Cartwright Shackelford III, left this life, all too young at the age of 43, June 1, 2012.
Carter, as he is known to family and friends, attended Walsingham Academy in Williamsburg and graduated from Gloucester High School, Class of 1987. He was employed by the Virginia Marine Resource Commission as Fisheries Management Specialist III. Carter was known for his fantastic sense of humor as well as his intellect. One of his many comrades made the comment "whatever you told him, remained locked in his secret vault."
No matter where he was, Carter could adapt himself to any situation including selling Girl Scout cookies with his daughters. Affectionately, his girls dubbed him "Kahtoo" very early on because the youngest was unable to pronounce "Carter," It stuck for life.
His paternal grandparents, Hershel C. and Minnie Shackelford; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Fasion; and father-in-law, Robert Ray Blevins Sr., preceded him in death. While close to his entire family, he was the apple of each of his grandfather's eye.
Carter is survived by his wife, Molly O. Shackelford (Smoochies!!); daughters, Katie and Kassie (Katiebug and Chuggabug); parents; Hershel C. and Virginia Shackelford; mother-in-law, Carolyn Joyce Manning Williams and husband Lester; and aunt, Nancy S. Jones.
Funeral services, conducted by Pastor Richard Whiteheart, will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 6, 2012, at Union Baptist Church, Achilles. Interment will follow in Rosewell Memorial Garden Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point.
In Carter's memory, memorial contributions may be made to Girl Scout Troop 1215, c/o Caroline Smith, 2129 Nicole Drive, Hayes, VA 23072.
His positive energy, personality as well as insistent spirit will be sorely missed by his family and friends. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

I am so sorry to hear of Carter's passing. Carter and I were closest friends growing up and spent many rides home on the Walsingham bus in silence due to his sense of humor and inability to hold a laugh in. Some of the my best memories growing up are with Carter riding 3-wheelers. Who would think decades later he would move in down the street. The few times our paths crossed over the past years, Carter always spoke of “his girls” with that wide-open smile.

We will keep you in our prayers.

I had the pleasure of sharing an office with Carter for a little over a year. I truely enjoyed his humor and wit as we "counted fish!" Thursday will forever be "Taco Salad Thursday" for me, and I'll shake a little extra Texas Pete's Hot Sauce on my next one in his honor! He was pure entertainment for sure! Molly, you and the girls are in my thoughts during this difficult time.

We always enjoyed seeing Carter at lunch in the cafeteria and he took great care in making sure he got the lunch right for his wife. He was a pleasure to talk to and was a regular on taco salad day and we always enjoyed waiting on Carter. We will miss him and we are very sad for your loss of a wonderful husband and father. May GOD'S comfort and love surround you while HE moves Carter to Heaven to live in Our Heavenly Father's Glory. God Bless your family. To the family, guests and friends of Carter. This past week has been an emotional time for us all. We cannot fathum the loss of a child or the pain of a passing spouse. God is merciful and stopped the element of uncertainty for the standing and claimed Carter's soul and essence as his own. Amen. We pray that Molly, the girls & Mr & Mrs Shackelford are blessed with peace, precious memories and full hearts once again. God Bless...
