James SHACKELFORD Obituary

GLOUCESTER - James Carlton Shackelford passed away peacefully at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital Friday, April 9, 2010, with his loving family by his side.
Born Feb. 3, 1926, in Gloucester Point, Va., he was a lifelong resident of Gloucester County. Carlton spent his entire adult life as an automotive mechanic and was known for his reputation of being one of the best mechanics in Gloucester County. If he couldn't fix it, it couldn't be fixed! He retired as Service Manger from Quinn Motors in 1993, and continued helping friends with their automotive and small engine problems, especially the senior ladies in the community, who frequently called on him with dead batteries, flat tires, loose tail pipes, or strange noises coming from under the hood. As a youngster, he was know for playing pranks on his teachers while tinkering with alarm clocks and other mechanical devices while class was in session.
Preceding him in rest are his parents, J. Stanley and Maud Thomas Shackelford; his wife of 39 years, Margaret Gregg Shackelford; and sister, Christine Shackelford Harris.
He is survived by his sister, Joan Shackelford Fecondo (Anthony) of Yorktown, Va.; niece, Nan Harris Leigh (Robert); and nephew, James Edward Harris (Betsie) all of Gloucester Point, Va.; and nephews, Anthony Fecondo Jr. (Jody) of Yorktown, Va., and John Fecondo of San Francisco, Calif.
The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 12, 2010, at Andrews Funeral Home in Gloucester, Va. Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Ken Waclo, will be held at 2 p.m. today, April 13, 2010, at Bellamy United Methodist Church, Bellamy, Va., followed by a graveside service at Gloucester Point Cemetery, Gloucester Point.
Memorial donations may be made to Bellamy United Methodist Church, 4870 Chestnut Fork Road, Gloucester, VA 23061; or Bethany United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 527, Gloucester Point, VA 23062.

I can't believe he's gone. He was the kindest man I've ever met. He helped my mom with all kinds of motors and was there whenever she needed him. My sisters and I just enjoyed talking to him. I'll never forget the story about John D. Rockerfeller. What a blessed community and family you all were. Please accept our sincere sympathy.

I have just heard of the loss of Carlton, I can not believe it and wish he was still here with us even though I know he is in a better place. He was a great friend and will be missed dearly. To the family even though I did not know you personally, I appologize to you and Carlton for not being able to make it to any of the services but I have been out of town and just found out of his loss tonight. I've known Carlton for several years and have alot of fond memories of stopping and just talking to him. Knowing all of the kind things he did for others it was enjoyable to catch him not at home and be able to weedeat his yard and leave before he returned home and then stop later in the day to visit and when he asked if I had done it, just play dumb and say no, I don't know who would do that. We would both laugh and visit for a while. He was the best mechanic I knew and will miss his guidance and input when I'm tring to fix my own things. I can see Carlton and Mr. Shephard setting around heaven under a shade tree talking about old times and enjoying each others company. Carlton you will be missed.

With Loving Memories,
Kelvin,Shannon,Hector,Trent,& Austin

We were so saddened to hear of Mr. Shackleford's passing. He will be missed greatly by all who knew him. He always made time for those in need no matter what day or what time. If there's anything in Heaven that needs fixing, you know he'll be there to repair it. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to his family members.

We are so sad to lose Carlton...He was more like an uncle to my husband Ricky than a second cousin. All I can think of is that he is now with Hinton, someone who loved him so much! Carlton made me feel like instant family the first time I met him - 24 years ago. We will miss him and loved him very much! (Ricky, Lisa and Dylan Shackelford)

To this day, I still call Carlton "Car-Car". I have many wonderful memories that I will cherish. They start as a little boy being around "Mar-Mar" and "Car-Car" at family gatherings, then all of the wonderful weekends spent on the Mar Car II at the Yacht Haven. Car Car was THE BEST at helping out when you needed a hand or just sitting around to joke about the old days. And more recentlty, just being able to stop by the house and take time to sit with him on the swing. He always wanted to know how the restaurants were doing and ALWAYS made sure to say "Come back soon to see me Gary" or "If you need anything, just come get it". Car-Car, Mar-Mar was taken way too early and you will be greatly missed but we know you will be so happy to see her again!! Gary, Karen, Olivia Ward and Family

Carlton was such a wonderful man! What a great loss to Bellamy United Methodist Church, it's widows, and the Gloucester community. As everyone already knows, he was one of the kindest and nicest men anyone ever knew. He used his talents and skills as an auto mechanic to help anyone who needed him, especially the widows. Everyone knew they could turn to Carlton for help. He would fix the widows' cars, lawn mowers, and/or do anything he was able to do for them. God said that we should take care of our widows, and that is exactly what Carlton did, but not only widows, but anyone! He was a greeter at Bellamy Church for many years. How wonderful to be greeted by that big, contagious smile each week! Carlton helped with beverages for every funeral at Bellamy for years. He said, "I can't cook, how about drinks, I can bring drinks." He brought about 4-6 large sodas for every funeral. He was someone that you could always depend on! How proud Our Father must be to have him back home with him. How proud Our Father must be how he lived his life here, as a good Christian man, and truly gave and cared for others, especially the seniors. Our deepest sympathy to Carlton's sister and entire family. You are in our thoughts and prayers now and in the days ahead. Carlton was God's gift to us for a while, now he has gone back home to rest until we meet again. May he live in the beautiful memories he has left in your hearts. UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN, CARLTON, FIND PEACE IN HEAVEN'S HANDS! God be with you.
