Joan Cunningham Newman

HAMPTON - Mrs. Joan Cunningham Newman, of Hampton, VA, died peacefully on Friday, July 8th 2016 at the age of 86. She was a graduate of Hampton High School, Class of '47, a lifelong member St. John's Episcopal Church and a devoted member of their choir for over 70 years. She was a world traveler and for most of her life Joan served with the faithful women of The Order of the Daughters of the King and was a standing member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Joan was preceded in life by her husband of 64 years, Robert 'Rocky' Newman. She is survived by her four children, 10 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren, who affectionately knew her as Nanny. Robert and Susan Newman of Hampton, VA and their children Woody and Anna Newman and Allison and Kyle Finerfrock; Noni and John Hanchey of Norge, VA, and Noni's children Courtney Pate, TJ and Andee Thomas, and Erin and Josh Hicks; Audrey and John Dalli of Shrewsbury, MA and their son Anthony Dalli; and Steven and Donna Newman of Virginia Beach, VA and their children Alexandra and Addie Richardson, Ashley, Abigail and Jacob Newman. Calling Hours will be held at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 13th at 6 pm. A funeral service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church in Hampton, VA on Thursday, July 14th at 2 pm with a burial at the Church to follow.
