Karl Emond Obituary

HAMPTON - Karl experienced an unexpected cardiac event at his home and went home to his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, January 19th. There will be no public service or burial. Karl was born on June 30, 1956 to Robert and D. Jean (Gustafson) Emond as the third of four siblings. He graduated from Bethel High School in 1975 and went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army (1975 - 1979) before going to work for Newport News Shipbuilding for more than 35 years, right up until the time of his death. He was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, where he married Kerri Donaghue in March 1976. They had four children, and Karl now has eight grandchildren, all of whom he loved to brag about and always, always, wanted more pictures of. He was known as "The Professor" at work and for good reason - he loved to teach and lecture on any topic at all and was always interested in a variety of diverse ideas. Karl enjoyed mechanics, woodworking, going to the movies, and researching obscure things on the internet. Family and friends will always remember his gentle spirit and big heart. Karl was predeceased by his father, Robert Emond, but will live on in the hearts of his family: mother, D. Jean Emond, sister, Nancy (Bob) Slusar, brothers Don (Sue) Emond and Glen (Paula) Emond, children Christy (Gary) Sams, Donnie (Joanne) Emond, Erik (Heather) Emond, John Emond, and grandchildren Taylor, Hannah, & Claira Sams, Caleigh, Hailey, & Natalie Emond, Summar Emond, and Jason Womble, as well as many other relatives. Karl Emond

Let me tell you about the Karl Emond that I knew. What I remember about Karl was he was caring and compassionate. It was 1984 when I mentioned to a few of my co-workers that I was planning on designing and building a cat walk over our preformed tin ceiling at our church, Central United Methodist Church, so that we could change the light bulbs in the sanctuary of our church. Karl said that he would help me. The way we would have to build the cat walk up above the ceiling (approx. 50 up in the air) we would have to pull the material up and build the cat walk in place.
I think his church was Bethany United Methodist Church located on Todds Lane. We would work on the cat walk after work. We had to pull up all of the material and wood. He was that kind of fellow. Karl and I worked together for many years on the cranes at the shipyard. He was known as the Professor in the shipyard. He started to teach in our training section of the shipyard. He liked the teaching part the best I could remember.
I later became a member of Crane Engineer as an analyst. I came down in 2006 with Parkinson's disease and then I went out on total disability in Dec. 2015. So I didn't see Karl that much after that but we still stayed in touch.
I really liked Karl and as far I am concerned he was my friend. He will truly be missed.

Best to you,
Charles Tweedy

My thoughts and warmest condolences are with my southern family. Karl was a wonderful person. His deep soul and bigger heart touched so many. He and my father (Paul Hanson) were very close. Karl really helped me through the loss of my father. He always knew just the right things to say. Even at such a distance he touched my heart. Much love to all.

To Glen, Donnie and Mrs. Emond and Karl's Family,
My deepest sympathies on your loss of Karl. While I have not spoken or seen Karl (or many of you) for many years, I have vivid memories of Bethany UMC, North Hampton Athletic Association sports and going to School with Karl. He was way too young and from the obituary, had so much to live for. I know my family (Nancy, David and my Mom, Norma Carmines) share the same sadness with your great loss.

You are in our thoughts and prayers. Please let me know if there is anything I can do.
