Lars OLSEN Obituary

VIRGINIA BEACH - Incredible father, beloved son, brother, uncle and special friend to so many, Lars Ditlef Olsen, surrounded by his family, passed away on Monday, Aug. 23, 2010, in his home after a very long and valiant battle with melanoma.
Born July 12, 1967, in Bergen, Norway, Lars is survived by his daughter, Lily Marie Olsen, age 9; parents, Eleanor Olsen and Ditlef and Tymbi-Su Olsen; brothers, Scott and Peter Olsen; sister, Bente Olsen Fernandi; and his love, Monica Jones and her daughter, Natalie Grace. He will also be missed by sister-in-law, Julie Olsen; brother-in-law, Kelly Fernandi; nephew and godson, Zachary Olsen Fernandi; his nieces, Natalie Olsen Fernandi and Daryn, Emma and Sarah Olsen; as well as by Lily's mother and Lars' dear friend, Felisa Strickland.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, 2010, at the Warwick Yacht and Country Club, 400 Maxwell Lane, Newport News, Va., with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a fund for Lars' daughter, Lily in c/o Lars D. Olsen Living Trust, 740 Thimble Shoals Blvd., Suite F, Newport News, VA 23606.

Lily was teary this morning, as soon as she was off to school on the bus, I collapsed and let my tears fall too. With our hearts aching, Felisa and I were rehearsing memories of you last Sunday. We remembered your ritual, "Do a little dance, make a little love, get down tonight!" and how cute you danced when you sang it. Our hearts ache, but it feels good to share about you. Lily's cheeks are developing nicely, to match her Daddy's! I remember the first thing you said when we met you and Felisa at the airport in Los Angeles: "I've got a big head!" So I heard the story about your nickname "Pumpkin Head". But I could never call you anything but Lars, or "Honeydew". We (Lily's maternal family), will always miss you, but JuJu will never stop hoping to be reunited for nothing but eternal happiness in the New Life to come. Love in Christ Jesus,

Felisa, My memories of you are that of a beautiful girl in Jr.High. And seeing you in Clairemont from time to time. I wish I would've been more brave to have approached you and become friends. I am sorry for your loss, Lars, from what I have read from others was truly a great guy, I cannot say enough of how sorry I am that he is no longer around for you and Lily, but I know he is there like you said, to guide you both and watch over you. And on the special occasions,I know he takes part in the birthdays and the holidays. I work with cancer patients at UCSD and have come to meet many wonderful spirits in people, and am saddened on the news of them passing.
I am left with blessings of friendships and good times shared with family and friends, an honor to have known them and realize not to take life for granted. I again, on this anniversary of a year since Lars has crossed over, my prayers for you and Lily, may you feel his presence when you need his comfort, and his embrace when you are happy for all the little blessings that life bestows from time to time.

I met Lars through my best friend Jeff Parker. Lars was good friends with Jeff's brother, Johnny Parker. They hung out a lot while Jeff and I were in high school. Then when Jeff and I went to ODU, we would hang out with Lars, Peter, Scott, and Lander at their house just up the street from where we lived in college. After college I had played golf with Jeff, Johnny, and Lars a few times. Lars was always someone I looked up to as a good person. Whenever we hung out with him I always felt safe. He knew how to have fun, but also had good judgement. His smile and his good humor are attributes I will remember him for. He was always positive. God has solved all his problems. He now has the best seat in the house where he's looking down on all of us struggling and he's having the last laugh, with his beautiful smile.

Almost 16 years ago you walked into my life and in that moment I knew I would be changed forever. In our journey as friends we were blessed with the experiences of love, laughter, tears, sorrow,so many wonderful learnings and teachings,and most importantly the joy of parenting our beautiful daughter Lily Marie. Your warm spirit, light hearted nature, and not to mention that unforgetable smile live on in Lily and for this I am so grateful. When Lisa told me I just broke down-He beat the odds so many times I don't think I ever thought I would be writing this.I will remember the wonderful smile Lars had every time I saw him, which was when I worked with his mom. It is with our deepest sympathy and sadness as we try to express our thoughts for your most untimely loss. Lars, to me, was a smiling youngster in a little league baseball uniform, always with a happy face, full of life and energy, as a team mate of our son, Hughie,at Moose Field in Newport News. As a young teenager, he became close friends with a group of kids from Menchville High, which included our daughters, Laurie and Jenny.The same warm expression of friendship and love could be seen as he matured in age. There are no good illnesses to suffer with or to die from,at age 43 or any age, but among the worst is Melanoma, the most difficult of all to predict. Yet he continued to fight with dignity and strength against all odds to the end. And now he is at peace free of pain and worry. While he leaves an army of friends and family, he will always be remembered by all those people he touched with his courage and strength, and most of all that infectious and everlasting smile.

Lars and I have shared many of memories together. From me never being able to pronounce his name corecctly, to never letting him get his way. Lars touched so many people's lives. I will always remember him with a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye. To the entire Olsen family - please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this very difficult time.

Lars, you will be greatly missed. You were one of my very first friends along with Scott, Bente, and Peter. Your parents were my "second" parents during those years. I have so many wonderful memories of playing in the neighborhood, at the Warwick Yacht Club, and the hundreds of Swim Team practices and meets we attended. From early childhood to your adult life, anyone who knew you can only have great things to say about you. You were definitely the model person and soul we all strive to be. This earth lost a great person way to early, and heaven gained a great soul. Thanks for being the person you were as anyone who met you, you touched, and in someway they too were a better person.

Even though we didn't see very much of you after we left Virginia Alan and I have shared many laughs, hilarious stories, and funny memories about you and your family!
