Marjorie Baxter Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Surrounded by her family, Marjorie 'Marge' James Baxter, 96, passed away on her own terms on Friday, May 5, 2017, to join her beloved husband, Jim. Marge will always be remembered for her unwavering faith, seeing the good in all people, her positive attitude and her famous chocolate pie. She was the daughter of former Newport News Mayor and City Treasurer, B. G. and Grace James. A lifelong resident of Newport News, she graduated as salutatorian of her class at Newport News High School in 1939. She was a lifelong member of Orcutt Baptist Church where she and Jim were married on March 7, 1942. Marge and Jim became role models and mentors to countless young couples at the church in what became the Baxter Young Adults Class. Because of their leadership, dedication and involvement in the church, Marge and Jim were honored and memorialized in the renaming of the church's street to Baxter Lane. Marge is survived by her two sons, Don Baxter and his wife Helen, of Newport News, and Rob Baxter, and his wife, Nicki, of Wisconsin and Florida. She was the beloved MomMom to four grandchildren, Debbie (Rette) Bevins of Mountain Top, PA, Cindy (Doug) Calhoun of Knoxville, TN, Rob (Karyn) Baxter of Middleton, WI and Ann Baxter of Nashotah, WI. She is further survived by seven great-grandchildren, Baxter, Spenser, Ethan, Grant, Patrick, Maitland and Layne. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, her granddaughter, Debbie Baxter Bevins, and her sister, Mildred Talton of Orlando, FL. A special thank you is extended to Theresa, Donna, and the Warwick Forest staff for their friendship and special care. A celebration of life will be held at Orcutt Baptist Church, 653 Baxter Lane, off Oyster Point Road, officiated by Senior Pastor Chris Fowler at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 28, 2017. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial remembrances may be made to Orcutt Baptist Church Mission Fund, 653 Baxter Ln, Newport News, VA 23602 or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, PO Box 4594, New York, NY 10163-4594. Mr. and Mrs. Baxter gave great strength to me through their teachings as I was growing up. I know their teachings live through their sons now and their grandchildren. A lucky world to have Mrs. Baxter travel in your mind forever.

Mrs. Baxter offered to me unconditional love as she led teen groups at church when I was young. I'm now 74 and have felt her teachings and love walking with me through my life. I feel so blessed to have known this family. Donnie and Robbie, I know you are aware how lucky you were to have had her for such a long time. My condolence to you in you loss.

Don and Helen, I am sorry to read of the passing of your mom and mother-in-law. You were mighty fortunate to have her as long as you did. May the pleasant memories of the past help ease the pain and sorrow that you are now feeling.

Mrs. Baxter was a tremendous influence on my life when I was growing up in Orcutt Avenue Baptist Church. I will never forget the pajama parties she would have for the YWA's in your home. I shared her obituary on the Newport News High School Alumni page on facebook and there were quite a few posts with remembrances of her positive influence. Your family will be in my prayers.

Don, Rob and family. So so sorry to learn of the passing of your mother, she was a wonderful person. I grew up in Orcutt and spent many of my teen years in Marge and Jim's Sunday School Class. I would like to think they were a positive influence on my life. Later on every time we would come home from church and after visiting with them in Kiln Creek, my wife Beverly would always remark that if she could be like anyone in the world it would be Marge Baxter. Our thoughts and prayers are with you especially on this wonderful Mother's Day. Ron & Beverly Rogers

Don and Helen & Rob and Nicki

So sorry to hear about Marge. She was such a wonderful neighbor and friend. I remember Helen and Jim working in the backyard with the W&M games on the radio. I am working today so will not be able to attend the services.
