Ruth L. Riddick

SMITHFIELD - Ruth Ann Layden Riddick, 72, of 320 Ginger Loop, Smithfield, VA, died Tuesday, May 27, 2014 in her home. Mrs. Riddick was born in Perquimans County, NC and was the daughter of the late James Oliver, Sr. and Ruth Winslow Layden. She was a homemaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Millard T. "Shorty" Layden, Sr. A loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister, she is survived by her husband of 57 years, Calvin Ray Riddick; three daughters, Sheila Stallings and husband Darden of Smithfield, Donna Riddick and Wanda Pittman, both of Windsor; a son, Jeff Riddick of Smithfield; two sisters, Betty Lois Lane of Orlando, FL and Marvis Parrish of South Mills, NC; three brothers, James O. "Teny" Layden, Jr., Kenneth Ray Layden, Sr., both of Belvidere, NC, and Wesley E. Layden, Sr. of Hobbsville, NC; three grandchildren, Heather, Brittany, and Shaun; three great-grandchildren, Lily, Ava, and Cayden, and two on the way, Adriannah and Jaxon Oliver. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in the Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Chapel, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, NC, by the Rev. Dan Gray. Inurnment will follow in Up River Cemetery. Friends may join the family in the funeral home during the hour prior to the services on Saturday, and other times at the residence.
