Shirley Bailes Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - On July 21, after a long, courageous battle with cancer, Shirley joined her father, Clyde Daniel Elder, in eternal rest. Born November 9, 1948, she was a proud graduate of Averett University. Shirley retired from Anheuser-Busch, Inc., Williamsburg after twenty eight years of service, having worked a variety of positions, most recently as Labor Scheduler. After retirement she enjoyed her church, especially her involvement with J2A, traveling, reading, knitting, and as "Jewel", clowning around with "Shoeperman" and other members of Kolonial Klowns of Williamsburg. Left to cherish her memory are her mother, Dorothy Grimes Elder; husband, Thomas R. Bailes; sister, Judith Elder Flynn and her husband, William; daughter Dawn Cawthon Tew and her husband, Gregory; son Michael Cawthon, his wife, Laura and their daughter, Sydney Cawthon; step-son, Alexander Bailes, his wife, Elizabeth and their children Camden and Gracie Bailes and step-son Christopher Bailes, and his fiancé, Megan Mowrer; as well as other loving family, caring friends, and her loyal dog, Blossom and her cat, Candy. The family would like to thank the medical professionals as well as so many others that helped and cared for Shirley during her illness. Services will be held at Grace Episcopal Church, 111 Church Street, Yorktown VA 23690 on Thursday, July 25 at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memory of Shirley to be made to Grace Episcopal Church or the Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research at 106 Towerview Ct, Cary NC 27513.

Tom, my condolences to you and your family. Shirley was a great co-worker. She was friendly, always had a smile, and was well respected at Anheuser-Busch by everybody. Pray daily and God "will" comfort your heart. Take one day at a time.

Our friendship started as roommates in or around I believe, 1990. If she borrowed a can of diet coke she would replace it with a six pack. When she cooked, pineapple was often an ingredient. When she first started scheduling at her job she made a 5 day job 3 days and was looking for more work. She was honest and forthright when you asked for feedback and yet had one of the most tender of hearts. I would regal her with stories of my escapades and hunting for more dogs and she would say “Oh dear,” and laugh. She laughed generously at every opportunity especially at my corny humor. She helped me (maybe enabled a bit) with my phobia regarding window treatments and shower curtain liners. She insisted we paint my cigarette stained ceilings and they have been beautiful ever since. When we went to the Fine Arts store to ease my jewelry needs she helped me show restraint. There will NEVER be another friend like my Shirley. Peace to her and all of us... ann.

I spent many summers visiting with my Aunt, Uncle, Judy & Shirley. Shirley was my appointed "Big Sister" during my visits. Nothing but great memories. Although we had not been in touch for way too many years, I feel an emptiness that's hard to explain. I am at peace in knowing she is no longer dealing with her pains.

To The Bailes & Cawthon Families,
I am sorry to hear about the passing of Shirley. I worked with Shirley at Anheuser-Busch for many years and we started off in the Credit, Billing & Revenue Dept. Know that God makes no mistakes and that He will get you thru this difficult time. I will continue to keep your family in prayer. Tom,
hang in there.
