Albert Lowry Obituary

Albert Dinsmore Lowry

Albert Dinsmore Lowry passed away on April 6, 2022, at his residence at Linden House in Charlottesville, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert G. Lowry and Alice Dinsmore Lowry.

He is survived by his daughter, Lindsay Elizabeth Lowry, her husband, Ian Lebbern and their son, Max, of Wilmington, Delaware; his daughter, Kathryn Lowry Lilley of Mayfield Heights, Ohio, her husband, Jonathan Lilley and their sons, Noah and Jacob; and his brother, Edward B. Lowry and his wife, Carolyn, of Charlottesville, Virginia and their family.

Al was born on April 11, 1943, at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C., and grew up in the Mount Vernon area of Northern Virginia. He graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1961 and obtained his B.A. degree in English Literature from American University. After working in several bookstores where he nourished his love for literature, he spent his career working for the United States Government as a Systems Analyst. On retirement in 1997, he moved to Lake Monticello where he lived until May of 2021, when he moved to Linden House.

In addition to his family, Al's two great passions were fly fishing and collecting and playing music. As with everything he enjoyed, he was an inveterate collector. Among other collections, he owned many museum quality bamboo fly rods, several fine Martin Guitars, a prodigious collection of records and tapes, and a remarkable collection of Hawaiian shirts. He enjoyed playing in a number of folk music bands and Full Moon Saloon (a "Parrot Head" band). As his friends and acquaintances all knew, Al was a great raconteur who could hold forth on many subjects, but especially on music, Earnest Hemingway and Sherlock Holmes. Al was truly one of a kind.

A memorial party for Al will be held this summer on a date to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Cancer Center c/o The Martha Jefferson Hospital Foundation (https://www.mjhfoundation.org/donatenow/tribute) or the Hospice of the Piedmont (https://www.hopva.org/donate-online-now/).

The family wants to especially thank the staff of the Linden House for the excellent, patient and compassionate care they provided Al for the ten months he resided there - especially in his final days.

Condolences for the family may be left at www.hillandwood.com.
